Adapted by Penny Farrow based on the novel by Lewis Carroll, Broadway Haus and DEM Productions have conjured up a delightfully imaginative retelling of Alice in Wonderland at the Marylebone Theatre, under the inventive direction of Nate Bertone and the sharp, playful guidance of Associate Director Eva Sampson.
Bad Hat’s Theatre’s Alice in Wonderland, presented by Tweed & Company Theatre, is not the same Alice you grew up with. This Alice (Colleen Furlan) is a child in grade school. Alice shows up for class with her homework assignment incomplete because she doesn’t know what to write in response to the final question, “What will you be when you grow up?” As is typical of precocious children, Alice questions everything, from the mundane to the profound.
The final production of the Joffrey Ballet season is Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. This is a busy ballet created by Tony Award-winning choreographer Christopher Wheeldon. The music by Joby Talbot is rich and aligns precisely with the choreography. Bob Crowley’s costumes also help tell the story. Some dancers appear as playing cards with numbers, while others become flamingos used in a croquet game.
The National Arts Centre Dance’s final show of the season is MOMIX’s Alice, a piece that takes us on a journey down the proverbial rabbit hole into a beautiful, bizarre, and surreal world.
The Washington Ballet’s ALICE (in wonderland) is a theatrical, whimsical, and approachable translation of Lewis Carroll’s iconic duology, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

Director Rachel Tibbetts takes 20-year-old Alice back down the rabbit hole in Slightly Askew Theatre Ensemble’s (SATE) world premiere of Shualee Cook’s TEMPEST IN A TEAPOT. Tibbetts has created a magical world of make-believe for Alice to revisit her past while confronting her future. Everything about the exaggerated whimsical world is fantasy come to life at the eternal tea party. As is often the case with recontextualized works of the classics, the play-within-a-play convention of TEMPEST IN A TEAPOT can become a bit convoluted in its complicatedness. Tibbetts’ vision and the cast’s execution of the material is highly entertaining, however those with limited or no exposure to The Tempest could be left behind in the storytelling.
Guild Opera Company will celebrate its 75th anniversary with the first act of Puccini’s TOSCA and the spoof MEANWHILE BACK AT MARIO’S on September 7th at Salem Lutheran Church.
While Kokandy Productions’ ALICE BY HEART has some lovely performances, the musical itself is far less imaginative than its ALICE IN WONDERLAND-inspired title suggests.
The Mad Hatter's Tea Party, a playful and surprising take on Lewis Carroll's classic tale Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, will return to the Royal Opera House's Linbury theatre from 4-24 September 2024.
