BWW Review: Skeleton Crew Revolutionizes the Alley Theatre

Today is the last day Dominique Morisseau's SKELETON CREW will run at the Alley Theatre. The play is the final chapter 'The Detroit Project,' a 3-play cycle which includes DETROIT '67 and PARADISE BLUE.

The boundary razing two-hander created and performed by Jennifer Kidwell and Scott R Sheppard Underground Railroad Game doesn't give too much of its own game away in the pre-show literature. From the first two words of the title, we can surmise that it has something to do with slavery but what does the word 'game' imply?

The Alley Theatre and Interim Artistic Director James Black announce the cast and crew of the 2018-19 Neuhaus Season opener, Skeleton Crew by Dominique Morisseau, directed by Taibi Magar. Skeleton Crew is the story of four factory workers at the last automobile stamping plant in Detroit and their struggle to survive as the industry and their way of life is dramatically changed. The play runs September 7 - October 7, 2018. Tickets are available at alleytheatre.org or by calling the Box Office at 713.220.5700.

The family dramedy of a wedding in chaos is no new idea in fact it's been done to death. That's not to say there aren't good ones but it's certainly a subject that's been thoroughly mined. Or so I thought. Danai Gurira's fantastic play "Familiar", currently playing at the Seattle Rep, takes this old trope and reinvigorates it by infusing it with the story of a family choosing whether they stick with tradition or find their own way. Add to that the fact that it's just a touching and hilarious piece and Gurira proves that the old wedding play trope still has a few tricks left in her.
