Bob Fosse's SWEET CHARITY (1969), based on the smash Broadway hit written by Neil Simon, starring Shirley MacLaine, will run in a new 4K restoration at Film Forum on Sunday, October 13 at 4:30 and Monday, October 14 at 2:30. Both screenings will be introduced by Kevin Winkler, author of Big Deal: Bob Fosse and Dance in the American Musical (available both days at our concession), with book signings in the lobby following both events.

This screening will be the uncut, original roadshow version of the film, that starred Shirley MacLaine, Chita Rivera, John McMartin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Stubby Kaye, Paula Kelly, Ben Vereen. This was Fosse's first film that he directed. The film received three Academy Award nominations.

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, SWEENEY TODD, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, COMPANY, CABARET, FOLLIES. Each was directed and/or produced by Broadway legend Harold Prince. Each contributed to his record-high pile of Tony awards, and has been produced and acclaimed across the world.
As this is one of my favourite musicals it was a pleasure to see it performed so well.

In 1956, Al Capp's cherished Li'l Abner comic strip about the rural inhabitants of Dogpatch, U.S.A. got the Broadway treatment, and was met with a lot of enthusiasm and success. It was quickly adapted to film by Paramount in 1959. To the joy of musical theater enthusiasts, the film is remarkably faithful to its source material and even retained a majority of the original Broadway cast. Even in 2014, people still speak fondly of the LI'L ABNER film, and now Masterworks Broadway is releasing the LI'L ABNER (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) on CD for the first time.
