The Public Theater will begin previews for the New York premiere of The Civilian's THE GREAT IMMENSITY on Friday, April 11. Written and directed by Steve Cosson with songs by Michael Friedman, THE GREAT IMMENSITY is a highly theatrical look into one of the most vital questions of our time: how can we change ourselves and our society in time to solve the enormous environmental challenges that confront us? THE GREAT IMMENSITY will run through Thursday, May 1 in the Martinson Theater, with an official press opening on Thursday, April 24.

The Civilians, the award-winning New York-based theatre company, announces the members of its 2013-14 R & D Group. The group's emerging and established artists were selected from over one hundred applicants. The R & D Group is comprised of artists from multiple theatrical disciplines. Each artist or creative team will develop an original work over the season. The artists and projects were selected to represent a range of different strategies for making new work from creative inquiry and research. This diversity of approach helps feed a culture of innovation in the group, making the R & D Group an effective lab of experimentation for the field of investigative theater.

This dark, out of the box comedy throws us forward about one century and follows a new civilization that is clumsily stumbling into its future...with a little help from Bart Simpson. Mr. Burns is an animated exploration of how the pop culture of one era can slowly but surely evolve into the mythology of another. Anne Washburn's plays have been featured many times, at different festivals. In 2011, her play A Devil at Noon was featured in the Humana Festival of New American Plays and in 2013, her play Sleep Rock Thy Brain was featured in the festival.
