Ten years ago, as a reaction to over-amplification of musicals, Scott Siegel had the crazy idea that there might be an audience for a concert of Broadway show tunes performed the way they used to be sung: without microphones. And Scott had the perfect place to try out his theory, the acoustically wonderful Town Hall on West 43rd St. With no money, but the support of a great many singers who wanted, literally, to be heard in a way that was no longer possible on Broadway, he launched the first Broadway Unplugged, boasting 'Sound Design by God.' Broadway Unplugged returned for its 8th season in a row with yet another all-star line-up on Monday, November 14. Musical theater history was revisited when these great Broadway singers performed songs from the Great White Way the way they were originally heard -- un-miked!

Last night, May 23, the 2011 Drama Desk Awards Ceremony took place at the Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan. The Book of Mormon, Anything Goes, War Horse and The Normal Heart were the night's big winners, with favorites Sutton Foster, Norbert Leo Butz, Bobby Cannavale, Frances McDormand, Laura Benanti, John Larroquette, Brian Bedford and Edie Falco taking home the evening's top performance honors. The Town Hall's critically acclaimed Broadway by the Year's®11th Season continues with The Broadway Musicals of 1932, a year that brought us famous shows by musical theater icons such as Kern and Hammerstein (Music in the Air), Irving Berlin, (Face the Music), Cole Porter (Gay Divorce) and Dietz and Schwarz (Flying Colors), among others. Produced by The Town Hall, The Broadway Musicals of 1932 was created, written and hosted by Scott Siegel. Siegel took the audience on a musical travelogue, exploring the history of the Great White Way and providing social anecdotes while showcasing the beloved hits and lesser-known gems from the golden age of Broadway. The show was directed by Scott Coulter and choreographed by Jeffry Denman, who both performed in the show as well. Ross Patterson was the musical director. In what has become a Fall concert tradition in New York, some of the biggest and brightest Broadway stars of today, showed that they've got the same vocal chops as the stars of yesteryear when they blow the roof off of the 1,500 seat Town Hall without using microphones in the BROADWAY UNPLUGGED concert, November 15. Singing Broadway show tunes the way they used to be sung -- without any electronic amplification ('Unplugged') -- the audience hears the pure human voice the way one never hears it anymore in a Broadway theater. And it is thrilling! For those that are tired of today's constant over-amplification of Broadway musicals, this concert was both an eye and ear opener. Neil Berg's 100 Years of Broadway returned for one night to Riverspace in Nyack, NY to perform the number one Broadway Revue Touring Show in the United States, featuring Broadway's Rob Evan (Jekyll and Hyde, Tans Siberian Orchestra), Rita Harvey (Phantom of the Opera, Fiddler on the Roof), Carter Calvert (It Ain't Nothin' But the Blues, Smokey Joe's Cafè), Shayna Steele (Rent, Hairspray, Jesus Christ Superstar), and William Michals (currently playing the role of Emil de Beque in South Pacific at Lincoln Center). Last night, May 23, the Drama Desk Association hosted the 55th Annual Drama Desk Awards ceremony at the F.H. LaGuardia Concert Hall at Lincoln Center. Former Drama Desk Award winner Patti LuPone hosted the ceremony, which honored the best of Broadway and off in the 2009-2010 season. BroadwayWorld.com provided live coverage on the site throughout the ceremony and was on hand at the event to capture the starry arrivals.

Grammy Award-winner and platinum-selling recording artist Melissa Manchester joined the cast of The Town Hall's Broadway Musicals of 1948 on Monday, March 22. Continuing the 10th Anniversary celebration of The Town Hall's Broadway by the Year ® concert series, Manchester joined the cast of musical theater performers celebrating shows that graced Broadway stages in 1948, including Cole Porter's classic Kiss Me Kate and Frank Loesser's Where's Charley?. The show was hosted, created and written for The Town Hall by Scott Siegel.

The 6th Annual Broadway Unplugged Concert at The Town Hall took place on Monday, November 16th. The concert's musical director, for the sixth consecutive year, was Ross Patterson. Taking the helm as director was Scott Coulter.

The Town Hall continues to present acclaimed Broadway concerts this July with its 3rd Annual Summer Broadway Festival. Presented on three consecutive Monday nights at 8PM, The Town Hall's 3rd Annual Summer Broadway Festival began with Broadway Winners: The Award-Winning Music of Broadway! on Monday, July 13th at 8PM.

The 54th Annual Drama Desk Awards were held tonight, Sunday, May 17, 2009 in the LaGuardia Concert Hall at Lincoln Center. Drama Desk nominees received their official Nomination Certificates at a cocktail reception on Friday, May 1st at Il Bastardo restaurant, 191 Seventh Avenue (between 21st and 22nd Streets).

Broadway Musicals of 1944, was presented by The Town Hall (Executive and Artistic Director Lawrence Zucker), on Monday, May 11th. Now in its ninth season, the critically acclaimed Broadway By The Year® series is known for great signing and spectacular Broadway dancing. The series is created, written and hosted by Scott Siegel for The Town Hall. The cast celebrated after the concert at Broadway favorite, Tony's DiNapoli restaurant (147 West 43rd Street at Broadway).
