The production, stripped of inessential razzle-dazzle, is a poignant piece of minimalist theatre rarely seen in mainstream venues. Chalk it up, by and large, to the small-scale nature of one-person experiments, not to mention the modest locales that draw your conventional cabaret audiences. Ms. Bertels transcends that genre as her trove of anecdotes funnels through a comprehensive and critically acclaimed libretto, courtesy of her best friend, Christian Duhamel.

'New' is the operative component. Not to sound mawkish, but there's an aura of novelty and innovation at ATC that we haven't felt for some time. Artistic director Sean Daniels shares a unique perspective on the arts that tells me he's attuned to what's trending nationally. Citing his intrepid programming makeover, Daniels is compelled to position the company as a pioneering force in the industry.

Arizona audiences will be the first to see Justice, a musical written by Lauren Gunderson specifically to premiere at ATC. The epic three-person musical explores the relationship between Supreme Court Justices Sandra Day O'Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and already, theaters nationwide are lining up to produce it.

Our first three shows, coming back, are all very charming, just laugh-out-loud good nights in the theatre. I always believe that theatre is a place for society to kind of wrestle with feelings and come up with new ideas about how we can heal and change. It's also sometimes just a great night out. There's nothing wrong with going and laughing -- and I think coming out of the pandemic, that is what we're gonna want.

MRT will return with two new productions – on film – this spring: Dael Orlandersmith’s Until the Flood, based on a series of interviews after Michael Brown was killed by a white police officer in Ferguson, MO, and Rebecca Gilman’s A Woman of the World, an evening with the adventurous woman who introduced Emily Dickinson to America.

Theatre companies across the country, in Mexico City are preparing both live and prerecorded online presentations of Arizona Theatre Company (ATC) Playwright-in-Residence Elaine Romero's diverse body of work during RomeroFest, a monthlong celebration of her creativity.

As part of an aggressive strategy to ensure long-term viability, Arizona Theatre Company has forged several new collaborative partnerships, restructured its operations and is in the process of maximizing assets as it prepares to return to live in-theatre performances stronger than ever. 

Arizona Theatre Company, in collaboration with The Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre and Winding Road Theater Ensemble, is producing RomeroFest, a month-long celebration of the diverse, thoughtful and impactful works of ATC Playwright-in-Residence Elaine Romero with digital performances by theatre companies across the U.S. and in Mexico in March.

 Steve Yockey, a Los Angeles-based playwright whose work has been produced throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia and a longtime colleague of Arizona Theatre Company (ATC) Artistic Director Sean Daniels' will be Daniels' first guest in 2021 on ATC's Hang & Focus podcast at 4 p.m. (Mountain Standard Time) on Friday, Jan. 8.

The surging COVID-19 pandemic combined with restrictions imposed by national theatre unions have prompted Arizona Theatre Company (ATC) to make the difficult decision to again postpone its 54th season until later in 2021. ATC will return to live stage productions only when it is safe to do so.
