Arizona Theatre Company has announced that Matt August has been named the Kasser Family Artistic Director of the 55-year-old professional theatre company.

Submissions for Arizona Theatre Company's 2023 National Latine Playwrights Award are open from now through Thursday, Dec. 15.

THE LION, an acoustic storytelling event, comes from the London stage for an exclusive engagement with Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park beginning Nov. 12. The genre-redefining musical will run through Dec. 4 at Warsaw Federal Incline Theater in Price Hill. Opening night is Nov. 17.   

It's quintessential Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon, in which it is that highly stylized, laugh-out-loud comedy, undercut with heart and passion and vulnerability. And strong female characters who are smashing the patriarchy and choosing their own futures. Women who are finding and re-defining themselves. Which is what I've always loved about Lauren's writing.

Arizona Theatre Company will kick off the holiday season with The Wickhams: Christmas at Pemberley Nov. 5 through Dec. 2 in Tucson and Dec. 8 through Dec. 23 in Phoenix.

The confluence of Ben's songwriting eloquence and his gritty tale of survival makes THE LION a worthy visit to the theater. Max Alexander-Taylor delivers a commanding performance that features a resonant tenor and a remarkable facility with five guitars. A confident actor, he has a natural gift for storytelling, though much of the nuanced execution can be ascribed to the deft staging ideas of Alex Stenhouse and Sean Daniels, who collaborated on THE LION'S revival.

Florida Studio Theatre has announced the appointment of Sean Daniels as Associate Director and Director of The Recovery Project. He comes to FST from Arizona Theatre Company, one of the leading professional theatres in the Southwest, where he has served as Artistic Director (CO-CEO) since 2019.

ALEX: You were playing Ben, you weren't playing Benjamin. That's a big distinction. In the writing of THE LION in various iterations of the show, you turned your life into various crafted anecdotes for the best dramatic effect for the story. There's always gonna be a slight level of making the story a little bit more compelling for an audience. What we did is we took what's on the page and built a character around it. So we built the character of Ben out of the script organically, with Max in the rehearsal room, rather than trying to recreate who Benjamin was. We created Ben off the page.

The Drama League has announced the 2022 Fall Gala, “Embrace The Season: A Drama League Celebration.” The Gala, presented with a spirit of uplifting and amplifying the New York theater community as it returns to a post-pandemic vitality, will be held on Monday, October 17 at 6:00PM at City Winery.

The Lion, a one-man folk musical telling a true story of survival, will open Arizona Theatre Company's 55th season after its run at Southwark Playhouse in London. The show will be directed by Kasser Family Artistic Director Sean Daniels alongside Alex Stenhouse, with actor, singer, and musician Max Alexander-Taylor starring in the lead role of Ben.

Marin Theatre Company has announced the four productions that will make up the company’s 2022/23 season. The 2022/23 season kicks off with David Greig’s acclaimed play, DUNSINANE (September 22 – October 16, 2022).

Lori Hamilton's North Star - or what I listened to instead of my intuition will premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe at TheSpace@SurgeonsHall from 5-13 August. 

This July, Berkshire Theatre Group will present Songs For a New World, the first musical by Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown at The Unicorn Theatre in Stockbridge, MA, and also the 2022 Colonial Concert Series: Featuring Broadway Luminaries Chita Rivera and Charl Brown at The Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield, MA.

Lori Hamilton is offering a sneak preview of her new show North Star (or what I listened to instead of my intuition) ahead of this year’s Edinburgh Fringe. 

'I see THE LION very much about what it was like for me to turn thirty, about how I became myself. When I began writing the show, in 2012, I was very much the-son-to-the-father. As of now, in London 2022, my wife and I are expecting our second child, a son. When I performed THE LION one last time (Southwark Playhouse, May 2022), it was the first and only time I've performed the show as a father. During that performance, I understood the character of 'Dad' in a very different way. I also realized that young-writer-me wrote Dad and Cancer as very similar characters; quasi-mythical external forces that controlled Ben and couldn't be reasoned with.'

Lori Hamilton's North Star will be Presented at Edinburgh Fringe. These days New Yorker Lori Hamilton is a happy woman – but it’s been a bumpy road, especially with all that family baggage on board.

​​​​​​Berkshire Theatre Group has announced casting for shows in BTG’s Late Summer 2022 Season. The full season will feature B.R.O.K.E.N code B.I.R.D switching, a world premiere play and an award recipient of the GRANTS FOR ARTS PROJECTS from the National Endowment for the Arts; Once, a Tony Award-winning musical; Songs For a New World, the first musical by a Tony Award winner; Dracula, a classic gothic tale of horrors; and Edward Albee's Seascape, a Pulitzer Prize-winning play. 

At one point in our youth, we all had to write one of those “Most Memorable Person I Have Ever Met” essays.  It always described that one person who changed your life.  Now, imagine taking that story and turning it into a musical.  Well, that is exactly what Charissa Bertels did – with the help of some friends – when she created My 80-Year-Old Boyfriend- playing June 16 – July 3, 2022 in the Loft Theatre.

Arizona Theatre Company's final production of the 54th season, written by ATC Artistic Associate, christopher oscar peña, is a coming-of-age comedy about a father and son who are living two different versions of the American dream, and how they navigate the difficult realities surrounding citizenship, business, love and the importance of family.
