Our readers set the nominees, and now voting is open for the 2021 BroadwayWorld Maine Awards! The 2021 Regional Awards honor productions which had their first performance between October 1, 2020 through September 30, 2021.

“Johnny & June” at New Theatre Restaurant is an outstanding, original, tribute concert reminiscent of what TV audiences might have enjoyed at home between the premiere of the “Johnny Cash TV Show” in 1969 and the final “Johnny Cash Christmas Special” in 1985.   This New Theatre Restaurant original features Scott Moreau as Johnny Cash, Ashley Pankow, as June Carter Cash, and Cathy Burnett as Country Comedian, Minnie Pearl.  

New Theatre Restaurant in Overland Park has opened an original and very enjoyable, new production, entitled “Johnny & June.” The show is a country music tribute concert to Johnny & June Carter Cash with Scott Moreau and Ashley Pankow as the title characters and with Cathy Barnett as comedian Minnie Pearl along with a five piece band.

In a career that spanned more than half a century and with songs and sound that remain as fresh and relevant as ever today, Johnny Cash is an icon of American music, whose life, with its roller coaster of highs and lows and its road to ruin and redemption, inspires almost as much fascination as his art. In a musically brilliant and dramatically compelling production of Richard Maltby’s biographical musical, RING OF FIRE, Maine State Music Theatre and Portland Stage bring the legend of the Man in Black to life in his unforgettable melodies and moments of darkness and triumph.

Relive the amazing songs of Johnny Cash in this electrifying tribute to the Man in Black. Hear all of Johnny’s biggest hits, like Folsom Prison Blues, Ring of Fire, A Boy Named Sue, Walk the Line, and many more accompanied by a live Country band.

As evidenced by the breadth of nominations for Broadway World's Annual Audience Choice Awards, Maine's theatrical landscape seems to grow and flourish with each new season. For a state as remote as we are, we boast two prestigious regional theatres now in their second half centuries a?" Maine State Music Theatre and Ogunquit Playhouse a?" which are leaders on the national regional scene and which have become destinations for travellers from far flung places. Add to these an array of countless other companies of every size and philosophic bent, and you have a colorful, rich artistic arena that grows more interesting each year. I am privileged to get to sample these performances as Broadway World's Maine editor and to be able to compare many of them favorably with shows I see across the country, in New York and London. These are my personal choices of the best in Maine for 2019, grouped by theatre company and show.

a??a??a??a??a??a??a??Nominated for multiple Tony Awards, Tintypes is a collection of musical snapshots of America's last Age of Innocence prior to World War I. A wonderful blend of songs, patriotic, romantic, ragtime and popular, brings to life the Great American Songbook. Written by Gary Pearle, Mary Kyte, and Mel Marvin, Tintypes features classics such as 'The Yankee Doodle Boy,' 'Stars and Stripes Forever,' 'Meet Me in St. Louis,' 'America the Beautiful,' and 'You're a Grand Old Flag.'

Maine State Music Theatre kicked off its Monday Concert Series with three sold-out performances (June 15-17) of Scott Moreau's original Johnny Cash tribute concert, WALKIN' THELINE. Moreau's identification with Cash is deep and unerring, and he brings to his portrayal of the iconic singer not only a mellifluous bass-baritone, but also the skills of a fine actor combining them into a truly remarkable theatrical experience.

'It's always hard to follow an anniversary season, where you've pulled out all the stops for that special celebration,' confides Maine State Music Theatre's Artistic Director, Curt Dale Clark, as he sits down with Broadway World Maine to preview the company's upcoming 61st season. 'It's a bit scary because after the anniversary, then, what next? But the beautiful thing about what we do for a living [in the theatre] is that every year seems like an anniversary. MSMT has carved out a niche here in Brunswick where we pull out all the stops year after year. Our public expects it, and it is pour job to do it!'

Farmers Alley Theatre is thrilled to welcome back Scott Moreau to West Michigan for a special, one-weekend only concert event: LATE & ALONE: An Intimate Portrait of Johnny Cash this April 12th & 13th.  Farmers Alley audiences will remember Scott from our record-breaking production of Million Dollar Quartet at the Little Theatre on Oakland Drive in December of 2016.  Scott directed that Sold-Out Run and pulled double duty as he portrayed the Man in Black himself, Johnny Cash.

Using anecdotes from Johnny's autobiography, multiple interviews, live concerts and documentaries, Scott tells Johnny's story with the artist's own words and songs. Featuring more than 20 songs from Johnny's 40+ years in the music business , Scott creates a stripped down look into the life of this American icon.
