Frank M. Young, 77, the founder of Houston's Theatre Under The Stars, Seattle's 5th Avenue Musical Theatre Company, and the New York-based National Alliance for Musical Theatre, died Wednesday in Palm Springs, California. Young directed the activities of TUTS from its inception in 1968 until his retirement in 2006. For two years in a row he was named by the national Theatre Week magazine as one of the 100 most powerful people in American theatre. (more...)

Together they perform a selection of timeless Broadway show stoppers, solos and duets, while adorning fanciful costumes. The Lyric Stage Company of Boston closes out the season with David Lee's adaptation of Lerner and Loewe's CAMELOT, a revision that hones in on the relationships among the three principals and retains the glorious score, while jettisoning considerable weight from the historically burdensome book. Producing Artistic Director Spiro Veloudos shapes the production with his vision for the 21st century, assisted by the virtuosic Music Director Catherine Stornetta and Rachel Bertone, whose choreography blends medieval style with modern dance steps. Remember when that tall handsome imposing clothing executive J. Peterman would reprimand Elaine Benes his trusted employee (and Jerry's soulmate)?  He had a somber pompous demeanor, but then his conversation made a U-turn into something absurdly funny.  That's the way John O'Hurley, the brilliant actor, author and Broadway performer ( Billy Flynn,Chicago) starts his Cafe Carlyle cabaret act, with a reprimand to Darwin Best who makes the off stage announcement at The Carlyle….'You call that an introduction'? Then John O'Hurley proceeds to introduce himself with an authoritative voice that's a mix of Richard Burton, Edward R. Murray and Charles Kuralt.  (more...)
