Actually, LOOPED is more specific than that. The movie in question is Die! Die! My Darling!, and by the time Act I opens, filming has already wrapped. We meet Ms. Bankhead as she barges into a post-production editing room with an F word so boisterous and stylish it could only leap from the lips of a diva. Film editor Danny Miller needs her to dub over a single line of garbled audio. He hopes to wrap that up in mere minutes. Tallulah’s Scotch-drenched dramatics have other plans. The play proceeds in pursuit of that single successfully uttered sentence over two acts...

If you’re a fan of musical theatre, then you have had some exposure to the deeply dark and moving tale of the Phantom who lived in the bowels of the Paris Opera House. However, you’re most likely thinking of the version by Andrew Lloyd Weber. While that musical is iconic in its own ways, there is another PHANTOM you can encounter in musical theatre. This version has music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and book by Arthur Kopit. This adaptation has been brought to life in Indianapolis by Beef & Boards, and it is a haunting yet exhilarating experience.

The opening lines of Jonas Kaufmann’s lieder concert at Carnegie Hall Saturday night, weren’t exactly ones that fill the heart with joy: “My songs are filled with poison—why shouldn’t that be true? Into my budding manhood, you poured your poison through.” But to have Kaufmann back in New York was a wondrous thing. And he gave us plenty to be thankful for.
