Topics will include how art is produced in an increasingly diversified America, and who has the right to tell whose story; the role of art in stimulating public discussion about racism and discrimination; and what roles social justice plays within the artistic mission of an opera company. This funny, moving, one-woman show tells the story of spunky New York-born heroine Jaqueline Marie Butler's teenage years in civil-war torn Nigeria as she navigates her new home, her budding activist beliefs, and her first love.
Mosaic Theater presents Caleen Sinnette Jennings' QUEENS GIRL IN AFRICA, the sequel to her 2015 QUEENS GIRL IN THE WORLD. Set in the 1960s, this one-woman show tells the story of a young Jacqueline Marie Butler, who travels to Nigeria after Malcom X is assassinated. One year ago today, I went from writing for a local theatre site to writing for the largest worldwide theatre site. One year ago today, Theatre Life made its debut here on Broadway World's DC page with a profile of scenic designer Paige Hathaway.
Today's subject Paige Hernandez is currently living her theatre life in a variety of ways. Her production company B-Fly Entertainment is going strong with several projects. She just wrote an opera that premiered at Glimmerglass Opera Festival and is now preparing to direct Queens Girl in Africa for Mosaic Theater Company. The production will run January 4 to February 4, 2018 at Atlas Performing Arts Center, but this Monday at 1:30 PM you can see a free reading of the play as part of Kennedy Center's annual Page-to-Stage Festival.
As part of its 2017 season, The Glimmerglass Festival will present the world-premiere hip-hop opera Stomping Grounds, a show written entirely in verse blending hip-hop, spoken word and opera. That is a poignant line and an apt summation of the first part of Forum Theatre's #NastyWomen ethos. The first piece in this horrifying, yet deeply moving, work is Monica Byrne's What Every Girl Should Know, which takes place in 1914 and follows four teen girls in a New York reformatory.
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts today announced a weeklong celebration to honor the 100th anniversary of the birth of its namesake, the late President John F. Kennedy-whose 100th birthday would have been May 29, 2017. The Center kicked off its Centennial celebration last May, and by the end of 2017, will have presented a suite of more than 50 distinct programs inspired by five ideals often ascribed to President Kennedy: Courage, Freedom, Justice, Service, and Gratitude. Special performances fromMay 23-29, 2017 span theater programs, dance, music, and the return of the Center's popular Open House, which all memorialize the life and legacy of America's 35th President. Highlights include performances by DJ Spooky, Yo-Yo Ma with the National Symphony Orchestra, the world premieres of Kennedy Center commissions by composer Mason Bates and Company E, and special Open House performances by Bandaloop, Flexn, and others. Additional programs through 2017 will be announced at a future date.
Put your hands in the air and wave them up high; it's time to talk about (say it with me!) All the Way Live! The Kennedy Center and B-Fly Entertainment co-commissioned this high-energy and well-crafted show and I can truly say it is a match made in hip-hop heaven.
'He was not.' A grieving grandmother repeatedly belts that powerful phrase across the audience from the opening scene of 'Brownsville Song (b-side for tray)'-an emphatic repudiation of the 10 second newsflash that has gutted the soul out of her dead grandson, Tray (Sideeq Heard). Another young, black life cut short on the jagged streets of Brooklyn's Brownsville neighborhood--same old story that flashes across TV screens and dots the local section of newspapers every day. But he, she insists, was not. Was not what? The phrase is never fully finished, but as 'Brownsville Song' plays on, you find yourself wondering less about what Tray wasn't, and reveling more in what he was.
