BWW Review: Brave New World - Portland Stage Streams NATIVE GARDENS

In the midst of a dark and anxious time for all theatres, Portland Stage has managed to navigate the rights issues to live stream its production of Karen Zacarias' NATIVE GARDENS, which had begun its run when the pandemic closed everything down. The resulting performance proves a welcome ray of light for Maine's theatre goers: a comedy that uses laser-sharp wit, colorfully contrasting characters, and a measured look at a number of topical issues which are provoked by a timeless conflict.

Portland Stage Presents NATIVE GARDENS

Portland Stage transforms into a blooming garden for its Mainstage comedy that challenges audiences to look beyond our differences and find our common decency: Native Gardens by Karen Zacarías.

BWW Review: MARISOL at Trinity Rep

Trinity Rep closes out their 2018-2019 season with Jose' Rivera's MARISOL, the 1993 Obie winner for best new play. It's a hodgepodge of magical realism and absurdism set in a rapidly disintegrating New York City, and is grand in scope as we learn that people's guardian angels have to abandon them to fight a war in the heavens. There is a lot to wrap your head around in this layered story, but a lack of clear direction makes it hard to find desperately-needed footing.  What the audience is left with feels like a lot of sound and fury.

Trinity Repertory Company presents Marisol.  Directed by Brian Mertes. Performances run May 16 - June 16. Tickets are on sale by phone at (401) 351-4242, online at www.TrinityRep.com, or in person at the theater's box office at 201 Washington Street, Providence.

BWW Review: A CHRISTMAS CAROL Charms Again at Trinity Rep

Trinity Rep's annual A CHRISTMAS CAROL production is always delightful in new and exciting ways. This year, they've partnered with 56 choirs from Rhode Island (and a few from Massachusetts) to make each show unique and feature even more local talent. This is a lovely addition to the classic story, and another way that Trinity manages to give this play something new year after year. Set in a classic Victorian backdrop, this year's production features lots of singing and dancing, and some pretty fantastic effects and performances.

BWW Review: Power to the People of FUENTE OVEJUNA

Like Sheep to Water, or Fuente Ovejuna, by Lope de Vega,  was written in the early 1600s, but has been largely unproduced in the United States.  Similar to a Shakespearean history, it's based on actual events that occurred in the Castilian region of Spain in 1476.  This production was translated and adapted by Trinity Rep Artistic Director Curt Columbus, and manages to stir up plenty of emotion while injecting much-needed moments of comic relief.  While the production, costumes and performances are excellent as they always are at Trinity Rep, the play itself is somewhat underwhelming despite containing classic themes of romance and triumph over oppression.

Trinity Rep Closes Season with LIKE SHEEP TO WATER, OR FUENTE OVEJUNA

Trinity Rep concludes its 53rd season with the Golden Age drama, Like Sheep to Water, or Fuente Ovejuna by Lope De Vega, translated and adapted by Curt Columbus, directed by Mark Valdez. Like Sheep to Water, or Fuente Ovejuna runs May 11 - June 11, 2017. Tickets are on sale now by phone at (401) 351-4242, online at www.trinityrep.com, or in person at the theater's box office at 201 Washington Street, Providence.
