The NY Dance and Performance Awards, The Bessies, New York City's premier dance awards honoring outstanding creative work in the field, announced today that Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, choreographer and founding artistic director of Urban Bush Women, will be the recipient of the 2017 NY Dance and Performance Award for Lifetime Achievement in Dance, and writer Eva Yaa Asantewaa will receive this year's award for Outstanding Service to the Field of Dance.

Shakespeare Theatre Association Member Theatre, Shakespeare at Notre Dame is in the midst of hosting two international conferences on campus as part of their "Shakespeare: 1616-2016" celebration. First up is the second iteration of 2013's Shakespeare in Prisons Conference, titled, "Shakespeare in Prisons: In Practice." SIP:IP brings community and prison arts practitioners from around the world to Notre Dame January 25-27 for three days of plenaries, panel discussions, and active workshop training by some of the most noted figures in the field of Shakespeare and social justice (including Curt Tofteland, Shakespeare Behind Bars; Tom Magill, Educational Shakespeare Company; Sabra Williams, The Actors' Gang Prison Project; Michelle Hensley, Ten Thousand Things; Bill Watson and Nancy Smith-Watson, Feast of Crispian; and Meade Palidofsky, Storycatchers Theatre). Participants will be given an opportunity to explore techniques for approaching incarcerated and nontraditional populations.

The incredible mother-daughter puppeteer duo, Nancy Smith and Gwen Bonar, have been performing and revising this unique puppet show for over a decade and this latest version is their best yet. Says Ms. Smith, 'It's funny, has special effects and is so good even boys like it!' Ms. Smith co-founded the Great Arizona Puppet Theatre in 1983 with her husband Ken Bonar, and both of their daughters, Gwen and Laura, have had a hand in developing and creating unique stories for the puppet theatre ever since.

BELLA'S DREAM, a new play with dance written and choreographed by Dana Boll, follows the true life story of Bella and Raymond Boll (the playwright's paternal grandparents), who heeding the advice of a dream, left their home in Poland, weeks before the Nazis invasion. Great Arizona Puppet Theater will be jumping right into 2013 with a 'New Year's Puppet Slam' tonight, January 4 and Saturday, January 5 at 8pm. Featured performers will include long-time GAPT favorites Rude Rabbit Productions (their motto: 'Monkeys is funny!'), Keep It Short Theater (whose works tend toward the thought-provoking and introspective) and Die Puppet Die (adorable puppets doing outrageous things); puppetry newbie Puppet Stuff; and, all the way from New York City, GAPT alumnus Doug Strich with an new marionette vignette created just for this Slam.
