BWW Review: THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT: Regional Premiere at Gloucester Stage Company
by Nancy Grossman - Sep 2, 2019

Gloucester Stage Company is the first theater in the country to produce THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT following its SRO limited run on Broadway. Based on the 2012 essay/book co-written by John D'Agata and Jim Fingal, the play explores the conflict between an unorthodox author (D'Agata) and the young fact-checker (Fingal) assigned by his magazine editor to vet a groundbreaking piece about a teen's suicide in Las Vegas. GSC mounts its production with local luminary and Academy Award nominee Lindsay Crouse, New York and Off-Broadway actor Mickey Solis, and recent Harvard University graduate Derek Speedy, making his Gloucester debut, under the direction of the estimable Sam Weisman.

BWW Review: DEATH AND THE MAIDEN: A Play for the Zeitgeist
by Nancy Grossman - Feb 4, 2018

Chilean author Ariel Dorfman's 1990 play DEATH AND THE MAIDEN is set in an unnamed country that is probably Chile as it emerges from a long period of dictatorship and adjusts to life under a fledgling democratic government. Even as the nation struggles to reinvent itself, one woman's road to recovery from captivity and torture is strewn with psychological obstacles that threaten her husband's career, their marriage, and her very sanity. Commonwealth Shakespeare Company Artistic Director Steven Maler's taut direction of Flora Diaz, Mickey Solis, and Mark Torres results in a riveting production in the Sorenson Center's blackbox theater.

BWW Review: New England Premiere of THE EFFECT at Gloucester Stage Company
by Nancy Grossman - Jun 19, 2017

It is a simple premise: Two candidates in a pharmaceutical drug trial fall in love, but is their chemistry real, or induced? This scientific debate is the subject of Lucy Prebble's THE EFFECT, now in its New England Premiere at Gloucester Stage Company. Under the direction of Sam Weisman, the play stars Lindsay Crouse as Dr. Lorna James and Brad Hall as Dr. Toby Sealey, a pair with a past, along with Susannah Hoffman and Mickey Solis as the volunteers who may have a future. Both relationships contribute talking points on either side of the discourse that fuels the drama, but the playwright leaves enough doubt to allow the viewer to wrestle with the conclusion.

BWW Review: The Engeman's GOD OF CARNAGE
by Melissa Giordano - Feb 3, 2016

Having seen a previous less-than-stellar local production of Yasmina Reza's Tony winning play God Of Carnage, I'm thrilled that Long Island's John W. Engeman Theatre has added it to their season this year. Leave it to The Engeman to redeem a show. This intelligent and well-executed incarnation runs through March 6th at the gorgeous Northport venue.

Bard SummerScape 2013 Presents THE MASTER AND MARGARITA Stage Premiere, Now thru 7/21
by BWW News Desk - Jul 11, 2013

The Bard SummerScape festival in New York's Annandale-on-Hudson presents the world premiere of an original stage adaptation of The Master and Margarita (1937) by Mikhail Bulgakov. The Master and Margarita is widely recognized as one of the greatest and most beloved Russian novels of the 20th century. SummerScape's theatrical adaptation comes courtesy of visionary Hungarian director Janos Szasz in collaboration with Gideon Lester, Director of Bard's Theater Programs. It is also Szasz, whose previous stage adaptations of Bulgakov's underground classic have already 'made it big' (Moscow Times) at both the Hungarian National and Moscow Art Theatres, who directs Bard's new production: an exploration of miracles, madness, and the magic of theater itself. The Master and Margarita will be presented in ten performances between today, July 11 and 21 in Theater Two of the Frank Gehry-designed Fisher Center, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year, on Bard's glorious Hudson Valley campus.
