The World's Greatest Circus artists swing into action in the spotlight under our intimate Big Top, where no seat is more than 50 feet from the ring! Invited to the dance: an awesome troupe of monocyclists and lasso twirlers from China! A mind-bending group of Mongolian contortionists! A kinetic collection of Kenyan athletes who shimmy up a pole as though gravity were a joke! A herd of hoofers - twelve miniature horses in an equine chorus line! After kicking off the inaugural season of Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater, shattering all box office records from Arena Stage's 60-year history and rounding up 10 Helen Hayes Awards nominations, Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! returns for a summer run under the direction of Artistic Director Molly Smith. The revival, featuring the entire original principal cast and most of the ensemble, has already broken more company records by selling the highest number of single tickets for a production in 24 hours when tickets went on sale March 3, 2011. Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! runs July 8-October 2, 2011 in the Fichandler Stage.
Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater will produce the first in-the-round staging of Ruined, the 2009 Pulitzer Prize winner for drama by Arena Stage Project Resident Lynn Nottage and directed by Resident Playwright Charles Randolph-Wright (Director of Arena Stage's Duke Ellington's Sophisticated Ladies). Ruined is the stirring tale of Mama Nadi, a mother figure loosely based on Bertolt Brecht's Mother Courage and Her Children, who provides refuge for women affected by civil war ravaging the Democratic Republic of Congo. The production features an expanded company with cast members playing live music and additional ensemble roles featuring University of Maryland students. Ruined runs April 22-June 5, 2011 in the Fichandler Stage.
Hosted by Christine Pedi, the 2011 MAC Awards will take place on Tuesday, Mat 10 and B.B. King Blues Club and Grill. The ceremony will honor Annie Ross for Lifetime Achievement and George Sanders with the MAC Board of Directors Award.
