Times Square Update: Official Broadway League Statement

'There were no evacuations from Broadway theaters last night. Due to police activity that closed a few streets in Times Square , there were some late curtains but all shows did go on. For exchanges or refunds, theatregoers should contact their point of purchase. All Broadway matinee and evening shows will go on as scheduled today. The proper authorities are doing their jobs to keep Times Square safe for everyone, and Broadway shows are setting their stages to delight audiences.' - Charlotte St. Martin, Executive Director, The Broadway League

It's been reported that all barricades and street closures related to last night's bomb scare incident were removed early this morning with normal traffic resuming in the area by 7:30 AM.

New Yorkers and tourists alike are well aware of the recent pedestrian and vehicular traffic pattern changes Mayor Bloomberg instituted last year. Considered one of the most drastic civic experiments in decades, the city closed off two sections of Broadway to New York City drivers in Times Square and Herald Squares in an effort to reduce congestion in these pedestrian-heavy intersections, largely due to the presence of the Broadway Theatre houses drawing in hundreds of thousands each night. The aim of the project was to improve flow of traffic along Seventh Avenue and Avenue of the Americas, making the trip down Seventh Avenue, from 59th to 23rd Street, up to 17 percent faster than before.

Signature Theatre Company announced today that ANGELS IN AMERICA: A GAY FANTASIA ON NATIONAL THEMES, the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning epic work by Tony Kushner, will begin performances on Tuesday, September 14, 2010, launching the theatre's 20th anniversary season. The first New York revival of ANGELS IN AMERICA will be directed by Michael Greif. The production will open in late October on a date to be announced.

As reported yesterday, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn, Signature Theatre Company Founding Artistic Director James Houghton and Related Companies Executive Vice President Bruce A. Beal Jr. announced a $60 million partnership to create a new home for the Signature Theater company. The Frank Gehry-designed Signature Center will be part of Related Companies' $800 million, 59-story, residential building and hotel on 42nd Street and 10th Avenue in the heart of the theater district. The building will provide more than 800 new housing units, including more than 160 that will be targeted to low-income families. The performing arts center will feature three intimate and distinct theatres, rehearsal studios, a café, bookstore and administrative offices, and will allow Signature to more than double its audience, with anticipated attendance of more than 80,000. The LEED-Silver building will create 700 construction jobs and is expected to be completed in 2011, with the Signature Center expected to be completed in 2012.

Co-hosted by NBC stars Jane Krakowski ('30 Rock') and Zachary Levi ('Chuck') and broadcast in high definition on NBC at 8pm EST, the star-studded tree lighting celebration will featured stars such as Michael Buble and Aretha Franklin, with a special appearance by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. BroadwayWorld was on hand to capture the starry excitement.
