Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation (SDCF), the not-for-profit foundation affiliated with Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC), has announced the winner and three finalists for the annual Zelda Fichandler Award. The award will be presented at an invitation-only event on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 in New York City. The Fichandler Award recognizes directors and choreographers who have demonstrated great accomplishment to-date with singular creativity and deep investment in a particular community or region, and is named for Zelda Fichandler, the founding artistic director of Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. This year's Fichandler Award focused on directors and choreographers from the central region of the United States.
McCarter Theatre Center announces a generous gift of $500,000 from McCarter supporter and arts philanthropist Betty Wold Johnson, in honor of Emily Mann's thirty years as Artistic Director and Resident Playwright. The gift will be used to support the ongoing artistic excellence for which McCarter became known during Mann's tenure.
At its first meeting of the 2019/2020 season, McCarter Theatre Center welcomed seven new members to its Board of Trustees. Soho Rep. kicks off its 2019-20 season with the U.S. Premiere of Zawe Ashton's for all the women who thought they were Mad. Directed by Whitney White (What to Send Up When It Goes Down), Ashton's play is a feverish inquiry and exposé. In it, multigenerational African diasporic voices gather around a woman, Joy. With Ashton's trenchant, irreverent, and lyrical writing, Soho Rep. continues its tradition of presenting works by playwrights whose experimentation with language, social commentary, and piercing wit turn the theater into a space that brims with possibility and danger.
What Will the Neighbors Say? is thrilled to announce our second bi-annual symposium, 'Agency in Storytelling.' The symposium is being produced by WWTNS? in association with Becky Abramowitz and Kori Rushton of IRT Theatre, who will host the event. The symposium will consider who can, and should, tell which stories - on stage and screen, in literature and through visual art. The discussion will examine the intersection of privilege, visibility and influence, and how that directly affects the access and space given to certain stories and their stakeholders. The symposium will be held on Wednesday October 9th, 2019 at 7pm at IRT Theatre, located at 154 Christopher St, New York, NY 10014. Gulfshore Playhouse, Naples' premier professional regional theatre, will begin its 2019-20 season in a big way by presenting Bedlam's 'Saint Joan.' The lauded production from the critically acclaimed New York-based theatre company will run Oct. 19 through Nov. 3.
Inis Nua Theatre presents the Philadelphia Premiere of the award-winning play THE NIGHT ALIVE by Tony Award-nominated Conor McPherson. THE NIGHT ALIVE tells the story of Tommy who lives in a filthy studio apartment and survives on odd jobs around Dublin. When he rescues a young woman from her abusive boyfriend, Tommy's dilapidated home becomes a safe haven from her violent past and the tenuous friendship they build forever alters their lives. The production will be directed by Barrymore Award-nominated director and Inis Nua Founder and Artistic Director Tom Reing. Previews begin Wednesday, October 9, with opening night on Friday, October 11. The show runs through October 27, 2019 for a total of 15 performances. Studio Theatre is extending its season-opening production of Doubt: A Parable, adding five performances through October 13, 2019. John Patrick Shanley's masterpiece received the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize for its compelling interrogation of certitude and scandal within the Catholic Church. Studio's production is directed by the theatre's Associate Artistic Director Matt Torney and is anchored by DC theatre treasure Sarah Marshall, distinguished by having performed at Studio more than any other actor.
