BWW Review: Singing the Praises of Orpheus' Production of SISTER ACT in Ottawa at the Meridian Theatres @ Centrepointe

I was invited to the opening night performance of Orpheus Theatre's new production of Sister Act at the Meridian Theatre @ Centrepointe. Sister Act is based on the 1992 movie of the same name, starring Whoopi Goldberg as the singing nun. Another story about a singing nun, you ask? Well this isn't your average nun… The plotline is somewhat reminiscent of the award-winning 1959 film, Some Like it Hot, starring Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, and Marilyn Monroe. In Sister Act, Deloris Van Cartier (Jerusha Lewis) is an aspiring singer auditioning at her boyfriend's cocktail bar in Philadelphia. After she witnesses a mob type hit, she goes on the lam and finds reluctant sanctuary at the struggling Queen of Angels convent with the residing Mother Superior (Mary Ellen Vice). Mother Superior insists that if she is to stay in the convent, she must cast aside her "sinful" ways and abide by the same rules as the other nuns. The only thing that saves Deloris from total despair is her opportunity to help guide the convent's atrocious choir, to whom she is introduced as Sister Mary Clarence.

BWW Review: SISTER ACT lifts your soul at Theatre Baton Rouge

In pop culture history, nuns have always been campy figures in the imaginations of the masses. But it was the snazzy, jazzy rhythm found within the hit film Sister Act that renewed the popularity seen by the likes of the Flying Nun and the von Trapp family.

TNC's Dream Up Festival to Debut ELEANORA DUSE DIES IN PITTSBURGH

'Eleanora Duse Dies in Pittsburgh' is a short dark comedy, written by Don Nigro about the terror and holiness of theater. Famous Italian actress Eleanora Duse finds herself regretful of her past actions and attempts to find some sort of relief only to be pestered by the comedic interactions of other famous characters around her, leaving her more uncertain of her eventual fate. Theater for the New City's Dream Up Festival will present the play's New York premiere August 27 to September 12. Aan Steele directs and heads the cast of eight as Duse.

Video: The Cast of Singapore SISTER ACT Chats with BroadwayWorld!

May 22, 2017, Singapore - SISTER ACT's Curtis Jackson (Brandon Godfrey), Will T. Travis (Eddie), and South Korea's Sophie Kim (Sister Mary Roberts) sat down with BroadwayWorld.com Singapore's Landy Eng for an exclusive video interview last week to talk about landing once-in-a-lifetime roles on the smash musical, learning West African Dances during college, and how SISTER ACT's on-going giddy romance with Asian audiences helps fire up their performances at the MasterCard Theatres.

BWW Review: SISTER ACT at the Noel S. Ruiz Theatre is fabulous, baby!

I am a longtime fan of Whoopi Goldberg with the Sister Act movies ranking as some of my all-time favorites. So, as you can imagine, I am thoroughly excited to again see the musical adaptation now playing at Long Island's Noel Ruiz Theatre at CM Performing Arts Center (CMPAC). This lively production, kicking off their 40th season, runs through March 25th at the Oakdale venue.
