COMIC-CON Musical Among Works Set for 2016 ASCAP Workshop with Stephen Schwartz

Four exciting new original musical works -- Joe Schmoe Saves the World, Gold Mountain, Comic-Con the Musical and Legendale -- chosen from a record 146 submissions will be the focal point of The 2016 ASCAP Foundation Musical Theatre Workshop in Partnership with DreamWorks and The Wallis on Feb. 16 - 18, 2016. For the first time, the Workshop will be presented at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts and be open to the public.

Bayou City Theatrics' URINETOWN Begins This Week

Don't let the title fool you; Urinetown is not a pipeline straight to dirty toilet humor! Urinetown is a satirical and cerebral look at how greed and corruption can impact a community. Most of all, Urinetown is a hilarious evening of theatre that indulges in making fun of itself. The ten-time Tony nominated show (2002 winner of Best Score, Best Book and Best Direction), also won the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Musical. Bayou City Theatrics brings the absurd musical comedy to The Kaleidoscope January 8 through 24, 2016.

Stephen Schwartz to Lead 2016 ASCAP Musical Theatre Workshop at The Wallis This Winter; Submissions Open!

The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts announces a new partnership with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and DreamWorks Studios to present the highly successful annual program, The ASCAP Foundation Musical Theatre Workshop. Now in its 23rd year under the leadership of Artistic Director Stephen Schwartz, the workshop -- giving selected composers and lyricists the opportunity to present selections from original musical works in progress for professional critique -- will take place at The Wallis in Beverly Hills from Feb. 16-18, 2016, with submissions now being accepted. The application deadline is Dec. 16, 2015. 

BWW Feature: Chernuchin Theatre Renamed for John Cullum

John Cullum attended opening night of Fracture Theatre Company's production of URINETOWN, the show for which he originated the role of Caldwell B. Cladwell, then had the theater named after him in ceremonies following the performance. Also in attendance were the show's composer, Mark Hollmann, book writer Greg Kotis ( they collaborated on the lyrics) and Jennifer Laura Thompson, the original Hope Cladwell. Cast gathered on stage as Cullum was presented with a plaque. The two-time Tony-Award winner ( SHENANDOAH, ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY) saiid watching the show had transported him right back to Urinetown and that of all the theaters he has performed in, this theater, where the show got its start, would be his choice to bear his name.

Irreverent Musical URINETOWN Comes to Cabaret at The Merc Tonight

Presented by The Barn Stage Company, Cabaret at The Merc's Summer Series returns in August with the irreverent and award-winning musical URINETOWN. The show runs Today-Sunday for two weekends at The Truax Building in Old Town Temecula. This 2002 Tony Award winning comedy satirizes the legal system, social irresponsibility, populism, and corporate mismanagement. URINETOWN will be directed by J. Scott Lapp, with Musical Direction by Taylor Peckham and choreography by Chelsea Nicole.

URINETOWN: THE MUSICAL Returns Off-Broadway

Giving new life to a cult classic, this production will take a look at parallels between the oppression in Urinetown and modern social justice issues such as Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter. Urinetown is scheduled for a limited run October 16th - 24th.

Penny Seats Theatre Company Expands Summer Offerings

Ann Arbor's Penny Seats Theatre Company significantly expands summer offerings Ann Arbor's Penny Seats Theatre Company is set to open its fifth--and biggest--summer season at West Park, performing outdoor professional theatre for just $10 (or less) per ticket, on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays (and one Sunday) throughout July and August. This year, the group takes up residence at the park for six weeks, performing two blockbuster comedies: The Complete Works of William Shakespeare [Abridged], by Adam Long, Daniel Singer, and Jess Winfield, and Urinetown: The Musical! by Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis.

URINAL - O Musical, the Brazilian version of URINITOWN, directed by Ze Henrique de Paula, arrives in Sao Paulo at the Teatro do Nucleo Experimental, in Barra Funda. The stage production, whose project was awarded by Ze Renato Theater Award, has as its main inspiration the German cabarets of the first half of the twentieth century, especially the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill.
