Los Angeles’s East West Players has a long and vibrant history with the musicals of Stephen Sondheim, making it hardly a news flash that the company would both take a – er – shot at the composer’s controversial 1990 work, ASSASSINS, and end up bringing it off so splendidly.

East West Players has released production photos from Assassins, which is running from February 17 through March 20, 2022. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and book by John Weidman, Assassins is directed by East West Players’ Producing Artistic Director Snehal Desai, and musical direction by Marc Macalintal.

East West Players (EWP), the nation's longest-running Asian American theatre and the largest producer of Asian American theatrical works, is proud to announce the resuming of in person production with the award-winning Broadway musical Assassins from February 17 through March 20, 2022, with opening night scheduled for Sunday, February 20, 2022, at 5:00pm.

Shows presented throughout 2022 feature the long awaited EWP premiere of Stephen Sondheim’s darkly comic Tony-Award winning musical Assassins, Interstate, Melissa Li and Kit Yan’s Asian-American pop-rock poetry musical, the world premiere of Inda Craig-Galván’s The Great Jheri Curl Debate, and Prince Gomolvilas’ The Brothers Paranormal.

Eight brand-new fifteen-minute musicals will have their world premiere LIVE ON STAGE on July 13 and 14 at the Broadwater Mainstage in Hollywood. 

Next up for L.A. Theatre Works will be Qui Nguyen's VIETGONE, set to be recorded live at the James Bridges Theater on the UCLA campus for four performances beginning January 24, 2020. East West Players' Producing Artistic Director Emeritus Tim Dang will direct this semi-fictional tale of how Qui's parents met in an Arkansas relocation camp. The talented cast includes Will Dao, Desirée Mee Jung, Greg Watanabe, Paul Yen and Jeena Yi. I grabbed the opportunity, after all these years of knowing him, to interview the creative force behind the early development of the East West Players - Tim Dang.

East West Players (EWP), the nation's longest-running professional theater of color and the largest producing organization of Asian American artistic work, is proud to announce the cast and creative team for Spring 2020 production of the award-winning Broadway musical Assassins. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and book by John Weidman, Assassins will be directed by East West Players' Producing Artistic Director Snehal Desai, with musical direction by Marc Macalintal. Assassins begins performances on March 12th and runs through April 5th, 2020, with opening night on March 19, 2020.

East West Players' Producing Artistic Director Snehal Desai sharply directs his en pointe cast in a crowd-rousing production of non-stop Abba hits, the most joyous MAMMA MIA! Choreographer Preston Mui has created intricate, very FUN dance routines, deftly executed by all. Joan Almedilla as Donna Sheridan and Grace Yoo as her daughter Sophie - take this production to another celestial level.

With music and lyrics by Benny Andersson & Bjorn Ulvaeus, and book by Catherine Johnson, Mamma Mia! is directed by East West Players' Producing Artistic Director Snehal Desai, musical direction by Marc Macalintal, and choreography by Preston Mui. Mamma Mia! begins performances on May 9th and runs through June 9, 2019, with opening night on May 16, 2019.

The reviews are in for East West Player's production of ALLEGIANCE, starring original Broadway cast member, George Takei! ALLEGIANCE opened on February 21st and will continue to run through April 1st.

George Takei is known for his founding role as Mr. Sulu in the acclaimed television series Star Trek and as an influential social media icon. But long before that fame, Takei was born in Boyle Heights and spent his childhood in the Rohwer Incarceration Camp in Arkansas and later at Tule Lake in Northern California during World War II. His story of resilience and hope is the inspiration for ALLEGIANCE, a new Broadway musical making its Los Angeles premiere, co-produced by East West Players (EWP) and Japanese American Cultural & Community Center (JACCC) at JACCC's 900-seat Aratani Theatre in Los Angeles through April 1, 2018.

The 2017 awards honor productions which opened between October 1, 2016 and September 30, 2017. Nominations were completely reader-submitted and after the nomination period ended October 31, BroadwayWorld's local editors proofed the list for eligibility and errors.
