BWW Review: The Stratford Festival's Spectacular Production of CORIOLANUS Must Not Be Missed
by Lauren Gienow - Jun 26, 2018

Over the years, I have had a variety of different thoughts as I walked out of a theatre at the Stratford Festival having just watched a Shakespearean production. I often reflect on how the show made me feel, or the incredible performances I just witnessed, or the creative ways the director made the production his or her own. All of those thoughts certainly crept into my mind in the hours following the opening performance of CORIOLANUS, but Friday night was the first time that I exited the theatre after seeing one of Shakespeare's works where the very first thought that crossed my mind was 'That. Was. Cool.' The second thought that crossed my mind was 'Had the Tom Patterson Theatre been available, would this production have been at the Avon?' If the answer is 'no', then thank goodness for construction because the Avon Theatre is exactly where this production needed to be and Robert Lepage is exactly the person who needed to direct it. Again…That. Was. Cool.

BWW Review: Martha Henry's Performance is Magical in the Stratford Festival's Production of THE TEMPEST
by Lauren Gienow - Jun 21, 2018

As the house lights went down in Stratford's Festival Theatre on June 10th and it became clear that director Antoni Cimolino's production of THE TEMPEST was about to begin, there were loud cheers of excitement and, quite frankly, relief from the audience-many of whom had been at the theatre for what was supposed to be Opening Night of the Festival just weeks earlier. All eyes were on the 44-season Festival veteran Martha Henry, who was already on stage. The anticipation among audience members was palpable. Everyone seemed excited that she finally had this moment that had been rudely taken away from her by a bomb threat on May 28th. And then, as is the case with all good theatre…those thoughts and emotions were swept away, as the audience became immersed in the story happening before the

BWW Review: BAKKHAI at the Stratford Festival is Chilling and Exhilarating
by Lauren Gienow - Jul 29, 2017

This season at the Stratford Festival is the final season for the Tom Patterson Theatre as it currently stands. It will be entirely rebuilt, starting this fall. The current space is going out with a bang, however, in terms of the diverse and exciting productions that can be seen on its stage this season. Each production is excellent, but the most exciting of all may well be Jillian Keiley's production of BAKKHAI. This play may not be for everyone, but if you appreciate good, exciting, and inventive theatre, and don't blush too easily at eroticism on stage, then I highly suggest you get your tickets immediately.

BWW Review: Stratford Festival Opens its 65th Season with a Splendid Production of TWELFTH NIGHT
by Lauren Gienow - May 30, 2017

The 65th season of the Stratford Festival officially opened on Monday night with a production of William Shakespeare's TWELFTH NIGHT. Director, Martha Henry has assembled a fabulous group of players and they do not disappoint. Just the thought of Geraint Wyn Davies, Tom Rooney, and Brent Carver sharing comedic scenes together had me rushing to the Festival Theatre to see this play. All three are as fantastic as one could hope for, but everyone else is equally as enchanting in their roles as well.

BWW Review: JOHN GABRIEL BORKMAN at the Stratford Festival is a Powerful Night at the Theatre

Director, Carey Perloff has assembled a stellar cast for the Stratford Festival's production of Henrik Ibsen's JOHN GABRIEL BORKMAN at the Tom Patterson Theatre. The combination of an extraordinary cast, and the unique setting of the stage in the round at the Tom Patterson, allow for a powerful night at the theatre.

BWW Review: ALL MY SONS at the Stratford Festival is Memorable and Moving
by Lauren Gienow - Jun 2, 2016

A memorable and moving production of Arthur Miller's ALL MY SONS opened at Stratford Festival's Tom Patterson Theatre on Wednesday evening. It is the story of a family trying to live a post-WWII American Dream, yet unwilling to acknowledge what had to be sacrificed in order to achieve it. The entire cast brings nuanced performances to complex roles-each character relatable, and their decisions debatable. It allowed for a lot of reflection on the imperfections of humanity as this writer left the theatre and I suspect many other audience member felt the same way.
