Ovid's Metamorphoses has inspired countless adaptations in the two millennia since it was first published - Mary Zimmerman beautifully staged a revival of her version at Berkeley Repertory Theatre earlier this year. In Weightless, husband and wife composers The Kilbanes (Kate Kilbane and Dan Moses) hone in on one of the lesser known fables of Procne and Philomela to create a rich, carefully-crafted rock opera. Rather than juggle competing narratives like other adaptations, this piece provides focus and clarity that enables real empathy for the sisters at its center.
American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) Artistic Director Pam MacKinnon announced today that Weightless-the critically acclaimed rock opera by The Kilbanes, produced by Z Space and piece by piece productions-will play a limited engagement at A.C.T.'s Strand Theater (1127 Market St., San Francisco) April 30-May 12, 2019.
A youthful, emerging talent whose incisive and uniquely devastating songs speak out from an almost ancient wisdom, San Francisco-based songwriter Lila Blue is an artist who pulls no punches and conquers any stage. Starting the new year off with a string of theatre performances in New York City for Under the Radar Festival, where her leading role performance in the rock opera 'Weightless' at BRIC drew praise in a review from the New York Times. An earlier review by the SF Chronicle was similarly inspired by her captivating voice, noting that 'Blue's lovely timbre has a delicate surface warble whose every note whispers of fathomless depths below.' As part of the festival, Lila also performed at The Public Theater in a reunion of The Chekhov Project, featuring several of her original compositions.
Previews begin tonight for the world premiere production of The Convent, a new play by critically acclaimed playwright Jessica Dickey (The Amish Project, Charles Ives Take Me Home), directed by Daniel Talbott.
Lila Blue is diving into 2019 head first, starting the new year off with a string of performances at the Public Theater as part of Under the Radar Festival. The first group of shows, on January 5th, come as a reunion of The Chekhov Project, a yearly gathering of actors and musicians reinterpreting a selected Chekhov play through original songs and soundscapes. At the festival, a reunited group of these musicians will perform a selection of songs from the project - one of Lila's foundational musical experiences, coming full circle a decade on.

The Joe Goode Performance Group presents the world premiere of Still Standing, an immersive performance experience through San Francisco's historic Haas-Lilienthal house, July 12 - August 5, 2018. Still Standing is Joe Goode's latest dance theater work incorporating his signature combustion of movement, word, song, and audience interaction. Using real, written, and imagined stories from the dancers and musicians, Joe Goode explores how we find resilience, persist, and reinvent. The work transports audiences through San Francisco's historic Haas-Lilienthal House, a mansion built in 1886 that recently completed a $4.3 million restoration. Designed by Peter R. Schmidt for William and Bertha Haas, it survived the 1906 earthquake and fire, and remained in the Haas family until 1973, after which it was entrusted to the San Francisco Heritage to serve as the organization's headquarters.

There are two pieces on the program presented by Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca, currently at the West Park Presbyetearian Church, on Amsterdam Avenue and W.86th Street, which I am so glad to have seen on Wednesday, December 28, 2016. The Artistic Director and Producer is Martin Santangelo, who founded the company in 1993. His wife is the brilliant force of Flamenco dance and choreography, Soledad Barrio. The venue lends itself to spirit and emotion, main ingredients of this troupe of dancers and musicians. The lighting is not elaborate, but it is an extremely effective part of the production.
Z Space and piece by piece productions are pleased to present Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca's evening-length work, Antigona, February 4-25, 2017. Press opening is on Tuesday, February 7 at 7pm.
