COME FROM AWAY opened at RBTL's Auditorium Theatre on Tuesday, November 19th. During the shows run in Rochester, November 19-24, COME FROM AWAY and RBTL celebrated multiple small acts of kindness. Following suit with the themes of COME FROM AWAY and the kindness shown by those in Gander Newfoundland on 9/11 and the days that followed, RBTL and COME FROM AWAY are pleased to announce that a portion of proceeds from the Wednesday evening, 11/20 performance of COME FROM AWAY were donated to the Rochester Firefighters' Benevolent Association (RFBA). Cast members Kevin Carolan and James Earl Jones II presented the donation to Devon Monin, who is not only the Secretary for the Rochester Firefighters' Benevolent Association, but a firefighter as well. Prior to Wednesday evening's performance, there was a special recognition to those first responders in the audience. The RFBA was created back in the early 1800s and many generations of Rochester Fire Department personnel have kept the association going through the decades that have passed since then. When the brilliant tour opened at Shea's Buffalo Theatre on Tuesday night I have feeling that most people in the audience had no idea what they were about to see (and quite honestly, may only have been in the audience because they kept their subscription from last season that guaranteed a seat for HAMILTON. ) What played out over the next 100 minutes was one of the most captivating and ingeniously told pieces of theatre seen in many years.

Come From Away, the most anticipated show of Broadway Across Canada's 2018-2019 season, is based on the real life events that occurred when the United States closed its airspace in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. Planes were instructed to land in Gander, Newfoundland, a tiny town with an airport that had previously served as a refueling station before jet engines allowed for Transatlantic flights. In all, 38 planes carrying about 7,000 passengers and crew descended on Gander, instantly almost doubling its population. The story is told from both sides, highlighting the kindness of the Islanders, who welcome strangers into their homes, as well as the fear and anxiety of the so-called Plane People as they gradually learn, and then struggle to understand, what has happened.
