BWW Review: A WOLVERINE WALKS INTO A BAR is a Fascinating and Funny Collection of Bar Stories
by Frank Benge - Nov 14, 2016

Greater Tuna co-creator and master storyteller Jaston Williams and TV's Lauren Lane are currently Stateside at the Paramount performing in the Austin debut of A WOLVERINE WALKS INTO A BAR. This new play by Williams brings to life a throng of fascinating, outlandish and delightful new characters that includes an aging hippie, an elderly world traveling Grande Dame with a history of sinking gondolas; an Anglo man who yearns to be Hispanic, married to a Hispanic woman who yearns to be Anglo; the most messed up wedding planner you'll ever meet; and a duo celebrating memories who end up dancing the cotton-eyed Joe. The Stateside at the Paramount stage has been transformed into a bar-like atmosphere allowing a few audience members to be seated around small tables on the stage. The evening of character studies is a collection of hilarious bar stories; five monologues and a closing scene starring both performers, all told through the eyes of several guest directors. Directors include Kevin Bailey, Linda Donahue and Kristin Rogers.

BWW Review: Entertaining SISSYBOY at NoHo Arts Center
by Don Grigware - Feb 15, 2016

Autobiographical one-man shows are out there in abundance; audience interest and overall success of each depends totally on the appeal of the individual performer. When you have a super talented man like James Mellon, who with his partner of 25 years Kevin Bailey has brilliantly run the NoHo Arts Center since 2004 and has also been a successful minister with the Global Truth Center, how can you come up any less than a winner? SissyBoy now playing at the NoHo Arts Center starts with Jim at age 7 and takes him all the way through his life to his current age, a youthful 61. It is simultaneously a coming.of.age story and at the end a celebration of surviving incredible odds and...embracing one' true identity.

BWW Reviews: Sequel to The Crucible ABIGAIL/1702 Mesmerizes at ICT
by Don Grigware - May 5, 2015

The creation of Arthur Miller's now classic The Crucible about the Salem witch trials of 1692 was influenced by the McCarthy era of the 50s. It provided an intensely ferocious perspective on the unjust distortion and destruction of human life. In Salem, Massachusetts it was a religious issue - did you believe in God or the Devil Incarnate? McCarthyism was about Americans and their supposed involvement with the Communist Party. Religion and politics should be private issues, but in a community riddled with guilt about morality, there is no such thing as personal. Your way of life is an open book for all to judge and condemn. Roberto Aguirre-Acasa has penned an imagined sequel to The Crucible entitled Abigail/1702 about protagonist/witch namer Abigail Williams (Jennifer Cannon), who escapes Salem and tries to find salvation after her crimes. The action picks up ten years later in 1702, and as a thought-provoking piece now onstage at ICT, Long Beach, it works quite well under the expert guidance of director Caryn Dasai and with the help of five outstanding performances.

What ever happened to Abigail Williams? Combining a provocative parable of sin and redemption with a good, old-fashioned ghost story, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Carrie, Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark, Fox's Glee) explores what might have come next for the real-life Puritan villainess at the center of Arthur Miller's The Crucible. ICT artistic director caryn desai [sic] directs the West Coast premiere of Abigail/1702, opening tonight, May 1 at International City Theatre in the Long Beach Performing Arts Center. Two low-priced previews are set for April 29 and 30.
