The Mabel Mercer Foundation put itself in a tricky spot to start this year's New York Cabaret Convention: how do you define what cabaret today looks like?

If necessity is the mother of invention, that scrappy lineage certainly continued with Rosemary Clooney, Barbara Cook, and Julie Wilson.

For three decades, the unofficial launch of 'autumn in New York' has been marked by the annual Cabaret Convention of The Mabel Mercer Foundation. This year, their four individual concerts will once again be presented at 6 p.m. at the Rose Theater, Jazz at Lincoln Center, beginning Today, October 9thand running through Friday, October 12th. More than seventy diverse vocalists -- ranging in age from seventeen to ninety -- are scheduled to entertain; thirteen of these will make their New York Cabaret Convention debuts during the 2018 performances.

THE GREEN ROOM 42 will present KT Sullivan and Mark Nadler reuniting to celebrate the Alan Jay Lerner centenary with their new show 'Almost Like Being In Love' on Sunday, October 14 at 9:30 PM. The effervescent duo, described by Stephen Holden in the New York Times as 'ferociously entertaining,' will include songs like 'If Ever I Would Leave You,' 'Gigi' and 'I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face' in addition to other Lerner masterpieces.

Don't Tell Mama and Dr. Bradley Jones will present a special performance of the hilarious and moving coming-of-age story, Dr. Bradley's Fabulous Functional Narcissism, to benefit the American Songbook Association (ASA) on October 31, 2018* at 7pm at the legendary theater district cabaret, where Dr. Bradley has been packing in SRO audiences for months. The ASA is committed to sustaining and forwarding this living legacy of American song and its many genres, which is loved and performed in every corner of the earth.

Earlier this week, The Al Hirschfeld Foundation celebrated Louise Hirschfeld Cullman at a reception at The National Arts Club in New York City. All proceeds from the event benefited the non-profit Al Hirschfeld Foundation, for which Louise Hirschfeld Cullman served as founding president for 12 years after the death of her husband in 2003. FEINSTEIN'S/54 BELOW, Broadway's Supper Club, again presents a cast of Harvard and Yale grads in The Fourth Annual Harvard-Yale Cantata. Join us for a unique evening at Feinstein's/54 Below, with Team Harvard looking to avenge another lucky one-point victory by Team Yale, who won in HY III for the second year in a row by a score of 32-31. Last year wasn't a pure win for Yale, as they were buoyed by some great songs and performances from their Princeton teammates. Harvard was bogged down (they say) by being paired with Columbia. No excuses in HY IV, as we're back to a straight up Harvard v. Yale competition.

The Broadway at Birdland concert series presented singer Natalie Douglas with another one of her "Tributes!" On Monday, August 20, she celebrated the music and magic of the one and only 'First Lady of Song,' Ella Fitzgerald. Musical director for the evening was Billy Stritch, with Endea Owens on bass and Lucianna Padmore on drums.

'Dr. Bradley's Functional Narcissism…The Psychoanalytic Odyssey of a Once Glorified Chorus Boy' has been packing in SRO crowds in a series of cabaret evenings in NYC, offering a hilarious and touching combination of psychotherapy, (of which Dr. Bradley Jones is a bona fide, longstanding practitioner in New York City) and song and dance (of which he was a bona fide practitioner in Broadway's 'A Chorus Line" for nearly ten years). He'll return, by popular demand, to Don't Tell Mama on September 16th at 7pm for an encore performance. If you want to attend, reservations are essential.

Marvelous Marilyn Maye has moved into the brand-new Birdland Theater for two weeks, much to the delight of the club's staff, as well as Marilyn's legion of fans. The "Queen of Cabaret" will be in residence for two weeks, running Tuesday to Saturday through August 4, with shows at 7pm each night.

Back in the day there were great night clubs with legendary singers scattered around New York City. It's 'back to the future' with the new Birdland Theater and the current performer on it's stage…..,the constantly new Marilyn Maye. With all do respects and appreciation to all the great artists that have recently inaugurated what is destined to become an entertainment landmark, the 7th show presented by Jim Caruso in the new room at Birdland has now made it official. 44th Street in NYC has some of the greatest music in the world in one of the greatest clubs on the planet. Marilyn Maye of course is arguably one of the best pop/jazz vocalists the music world has produced and it's trite to say but at 90 she still is!
