The Anchoress, a new monodrama by composer David Ludwig, "a composer with something urgent to say" (Philadelphia Inquirer), will have its world premiere on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at 7:30 PM at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia under the auspices of the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society. The next evening, Thursday, October 18, the New York premiere will take place at DiMenna Center for Classical Music. Set to texts by Katie Ford, whose poetry "possess[es] the veiled brilliance of stained glass windows seen at night" (The New York Times Book Review), The Anchoress is based on the medieval mystic tradition called anchorism and its relationship to contemporary society. It will be performed by soprano Hyunah Yu, the early music ensemble Piffaro: The Renaissance Wind Band, and all-saxophone PRISM Quartet. (more...)

Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO)'s 45th season concludes with a veritable piano 'festival' as Jeremy Denk, 'a pianist you want to hear no matter what he performs' (The New York Times), returns for a command performance on Saturday, May 17, 2014, 8 pm, at Glendale's Alex Theatre, and Sunday, May 18, 2014, 7 pm, at UCLA's Royce Hall. Denk, artistic director of the 2014 Ojai Music Festival, is featured on selections from Ligeti's Etudes for Piano, Book I & II, as well as Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major. From the keyboard, LACO Music Director Jeffrey Kahane, an acclaimed pianist, conducts Bach's Concerto No. 2 in C major for Two Keyboards, and Mozart's Concerto No. 10 in E-flat major for Two Pianos. With its hilarious exchanges, high-brow pedigree, brisk direction, and impressively gorgeous set, South Coast Repertory's new revival of George Bernard Shaw's classic comedy MISALLIANCE-with performances continuing through October 10-is one sophisticated delight, a witty set of back-and-forth arguments punctuated by a plethora of very charming, winning performances. Somehow, though lacking a real plot in the traditional sense, MISALLIANCE creates a thoroughly engaging environment for multiple debates of ideas, which in turn produces a wonderful timeline for absurd comedy and droll contentions to play out over two very verbose acts.
