Atlanta audiences are invited to explore something beyond the usual fare this holiday season: Big Fish, a magical, new 12-actor musical adaptation of the best- selling book by Daniel Wallace and hit Tim Burton film.

The Suzi Bass Awards revealed nominations for the 2015-2016 Atlanta professional theatre season on Monday evening, September 12, to patrons and industry artists. The Suzi Nomination Party was generously hosted by the Alliance Theatre, at 6:30pm in The Circle Room, on the third floor, 1280 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, Georgia, 30309.

Written by Hamilton creator and pop culture icon Lin-Manuel Miranda, the Tony Award and Grammy Award-winning In the Heights, playing now through August 28, opens Aurora Theatre's 2016-17 Peach State Federal Credit Union Signature Series before heading to Theatrical Outfit September 8-18. This universal tale, a co-production with Theatrical Outfit, delivers a poignant message on the power of family and the strength of community in the face of adversity. Actor's Express presents its summer musical RENT, Jonathan Larson's groundbreaking rock musical, running tonight, July 10, through August 9, 2015. BroadwayWorld has a first look at the cast onstage below!

Actor's Express announces casting for its summer musical Rent. Jeremiah Parker Hobbs and Julissa Sabino, both seen at Actor's Express in last summer's The Rocky Horror Show, will lead the cast as struggling musician Roger and his love interest, Mimi. Patrick Schweigert, seen in Aurora Theatre's Les Miserables and Mary Poppins, will play Roger's roommate, filmmaker Mark Cohen. Both making their Actor's Express debuts, Jennifer Acker (Georgia Ensemble Theatre's One Slight Hitch) and Jeanette Illidge (Aurora Theatre's Ragtime and The Mikado), will take on the roles of performance artist Maureen and her lover Joanne. Austin Tijerina, a 2014 Suzi Bass Award winner for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical for his role in Serenbe Playhouse's Oklahoma, will play drag queen Angel, and Greg Hunter (Aurora Theatre's Mary Poppins) will be his lover Tom Collins. Rounding out the cast is Michael Stiggers (Marius in Aurora Theatre's Les Miserables) as landlord Benny and a strong ensemble of Actor's Express veterans and newcomers.

Rosemary Newcott, the Sally G. Tomlinson Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth and Families, directs this surreal, one-act family friendly musical.

Rosemary Newcott, the Sally G. Tomlinson Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth and Families, directs this surreal, one-act family friendly musical.

I am quite aware that this will sound sacrilegious to many who read this review, but until I saw Actor's Express' titillating production of THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, I had never seen the musical before. I have a vague recollection of watching the film version on VH1's 'Movies That Rock' at some point in the mid-90's, but other than seeing Susan Sarandon in her underwear, it didn't do much to interest me. So, as I made my way to the King Plow Arts Center, I expected to be impressed by the tremendous young talents in the cast, but what I didn't expect was to be transported to another world of naughty, musical theatre ecstasy.

Actor's Express and Artistic Director Freddie Ashley are excited to invite the press to the opening of The Rocky Horror Show, by Richard O'Brien, directed by Freddie Ashley, and featuring some of Atlanta's top notch musical theatre stars. Music direction is by Seth Davis, choreography is by Ricardo Aponte. The production opens Saturday night, July 12, 2014, 8pm curtain. Preview performances are July 10 and 11, and the ever-popular pay-what-you-want sneak peek, "Director's Rough Cut", is Wednesday, July 9.

Aurora Theatre continues the 2013-2014 Harvel Lab Series with a Teatro del Sol production, Mariela in the Desert by Karen Zacarias. It is 1950 and artists Mariela and Jose are living an isolated existence in the desert of Northern Mexico, haunted by the ghost of their young son. Jose is very ill and Mariela sends a telegram to their daughter encouraging her to come home. Where once the walls were beautifully decorated, now only one painting remains, and it is shrouded in mystery. This play will be performed in Spanish with English supertitles. This production features an amazing cast including the stunning Blanca Aguero in the title role of Mariela and Aurora Theatre Producing Artistic Director Anthony P. Rodriguez as her husband, the ailing artist Jose. Scroll down to see some pictures of Blanca Aguero from the show!

Scratching opens Thursday, August 22, running Thursday, Today and Saturday nights at 8pm until September 15. Preview performances are tonight and tomorrow, August 16 and 17. There will be a thrilling talk back session with the writer, director, and performers following the August 23 performance.
