Within the first few seconds of Kim Tobin-Lehl's amusingly frenzied entrance onto the 4th Wall stage in SHAKESPEARE IN VEGAS, one word immediately crossed my mind-'authentic'. For the subsequent two-hour performance, authenticity remained to be a theme present in the developed characters, the feel-good storyline, and the entertaining true-to-the-industry moments that any involved theatre individual would be able to relate to. This isn't the first time a theatre newbie has stolen the scene from the star, the first time actresses have gotten catty backstage, or the first time an actress was hired for a role they believed would be much more wonderful than the reality was. However, for wise-guy director Tony (Philip Lehl), his season was indeed going to be one of firsts: He was going to bring Shakespeare to Las Vegas.

Stages Repertory Theatre presents the regional premiere of Houston native Philip Boehm's play Alma en venta (Soul on Sale), running January 24 - February 11, 2018. Boehm, who wrote and directed the production, is the Artistic Director of Upstream Theatre in St. Louis, MO, and previously collaborated with Stages to bring the US Premiere of De Kus (The Kiss) to Houston in 2016. Alma en venta, a story about the commodification of Latino art and culture, is presented in conjunction with Stages' first annual Latina/o theater festival, Sin Muros, a free event featuring the world premiere of Josh Innocencio's Purple Eyes, play readings from notable writers Bernardo Cubria, Tanya Saracho and Mando Alvarado, workshops, poetry readings, and more, taking place February 1-4.

Rec Room Arts is thrilled to present SENDER, a raucous new comedy by Chicago-based playwright Ike Holter, recent recipient of the Windham-Campbell Literature Prize for Drama and author of notable works EXIT STRATEGY and HIT THE WALL. In SENDER, Holter utilizes his signature rich, lyrical, rapid-fire language as he presents a millennial-centric, pressure-cooker of a world that's edgy, challenging, socially relevant, and hilarious.

The Gravity Players present an encore performance of THE LAST DAYS OF JUDAS ISCARIOT, where the courtroom is in purgatory, the special witnesses include Mother Teresa and the Devil, and the defendant is Judas Iscariot.

In February 2017, longtime friends, theatre artists, and educators Matt Hune and Stephanie Wittels Wachs launched Rec Room Arts, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization committed to the creation and development of new work across artistic disciplines.

On Friday night The Gravity Players opened a courtroom comedy and exploration of faith, THE LAST DAYS OF JUDAS ISCARIOT, to a lively audience. Set in the Court of Purgatory, a place of redemption and a 'waiting list' between Heaven and Hell, the audience was to witness trials regarding sinners' placement in Purgatory, as many desired to appeal their judgment to move on to Heaven. Judge Littlefield, played by Paul Menzel, demands Bailiff (Philip Hays) to call the cases, 'God and the Kingdom of Heaven and Earth versus Thorseen the Implacable', 'God and the Kingdom of Heaven and Earth versus Benedict Arnold', and finally 'God and the Kingdom of Heaven and Earth versus Judas Iscariot'.

What has become of Jesus' most notorious follower? In this dark comedy, time and space bend in a provocatively poignant quest to decide Judas' fate. Set in a courtroom in Purgatory, an uproarious cast of characters from Heaven and Hell swarm the stage to determine whether he has any grounds for redemption.

The first in Stages Repertory Theatre's 2017 Get Talking Series that highlights important voices in contemporary theatre - Who Am I This Time (& Other Conundrums of Love) by Aaron Posner and adapted from stories by Kurt Vonnegut, made its regional premiere in Houston on January 25 and runs through February 12.
