BWW Review: NEWSIES Is the Orpheum's Latest Edition
by Joseph Baker
- Dec 9, 2015
There was a moment tonight in the Orpheum's presentation of NEWSIES that I envisioned the entire production as an animated feature -- and why not? There was the infectious music of Alan Menken, who long ago set the 'gold standard' for the resurgence of Disney animation beginning with THE LITTLE MERMAID; there was, too, the 'underdog' hero ('Jack Kelley,' played with panache and charisma by Joey Barreiro), who serves as a point of inspiration for a horde of ragtag 'newsies'; and instead of an 'Ariel' or 'Belle,' there was 'Katherine,' the spirited young 'girl reporter,' who, with her independence and ingenuity, could fall right in line with the other young heroines of Disney films.

BWW Reviews: WICKED at Paramount a Bit Flat but Still Wicked
by Jay Irwin
- Jul 10, 2015
I don't think many theater nerds need to argue the virtues of Stephen Schwartz's hit show "Wicked" currently playing at the Paramount Theatre. It's one of those shows that's widely and verbally loved by aficionados and general theatergoers alike. So when the tour comes through town it's bound to have the rich and powerful voices needed to blast those wonderful songs into the rafters. And this tour is no exception. But while this tour also boasts two wonderful leads who also manage some brilliant and layered storytelling in their characters, some of the supporting players felt lacking and flat in that aspect making this go around with the show not as awe-inspiring as past viewings.

Westchester Broadway Theatre's CAMELOT Begins 1/29
by Tyler Peterson
- Jan 22, 2015
Lerner and Loewe's timeless masterpiece, Camelot was inspired by T. H. White's chivalric tale, 'The Once and Future King". It is considered one of history's greatest love stories. King Arthur and his new queen, Guenevere, rule their kingdom with ideals of chivalry and peace, but the arrival of Sir Lancelot threatens the foundation of the realm in one of the most fabled love triangles of all time. Revel in the glorious music including,"Camelot", 'If Ever I WouldLeave You', 'The Lusty Month of May', 'I Loved You Once in Silence', 'What Do the Simple Folk Do?'
BWW Reviews: WICKED National Tour at Durham Performing Arts Center
by Jeffrey Karasarides
- Jan 9, 2015
Based on the Gregory Maguire novel titled Wicked: The Life & Times of The Wicked Witch of the West, this musical tells the story of The Wizard of Oz from the witches' perspective long before Dorothy dropped in. Wicked tells the story of two unlikely friends, Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda the Good, who struggle through opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, reactions to the Wizard's corrupt government, and, ultimately, Elphaba's public fall from grace.
