Barneys New York Announces MANTLE: A Virtual Reality Experience

Barneys New York, the luxury specialty retailer, today announced its spring campaign, Mantle, a virtual reality experience with the Martha Graham Dance Company and Samsung Electronics America, Inc. The iconic New York institutions have joined forces to create a virtual reality short film that blends fashion, technology and contemporary dance, premiering in Barneys New York stores in exclusive designer looks straight from the runway. The experience can be viewed in Barneys New York stores with Gear VR powered by Oculus, through the Samsung VR app, and online at Barneys.com, on March 6.

Martha Graham Dance Company Presents NEW@Graham

The Martha Graham Dance Company's spring NEW@Graham event will feature a look inside two works that are new to the Company: Lucinda Childs' Histoire and Lar Lubovitch's The Legend of Ten. For Histoire, Childs has expanded a 1999 duet she created for the Company into a work for eight dancers. The Legend of Ten joins the Company's repertory in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company. Excerpts from both works will be performed by the renowned Graham dancers and introduced by Graham Company Artistic Director Janet Eilber. The Company will premiere both works during its New York City Center season in April.

As part of its Studio Series, the Martha Graham Dance Company will present a special holiday performance of Martha Graham's beloved masterwork Appalachian Spring. The complete dance will be presented in costume and with the classic Noguchi set, and will be introduced by Graham Company Artistic Director Janet Eilber. Performances are Today, December 1, at 7pm, and Saturday, December 2, at 1pm (family matinee) and 6pm.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Lamentation Variations project- LamVar10: A Festival for New Work. Since its founding in 2007 by Graham Company Artistic Director Janet Eilber, the company has commissioned some of today's most noteworthy choreographers to create new works inspired by Graham's signature solo, Lamentation, originally created in 1930, on dancers of the company. These choreographers have included Lar Lubovitch, Michelle Dorrance, and Doug Varone, among others.

The venerable Martha Graham Dance Company, founded 91 years ago in 1926, is thriving anew after getting past protracted legal battles following modern dance pioneer Graham's death and coping with the loss of historical material during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Much of the credit for the success of the current iteration of the troupe goes to Janet Eilber, a former Graham principal who has been at the helm as Artistic Director since 2005. She has instituted a policy of not only presenting Graham's classics but also commissioning fresh visions from today's finest choreographers.

The Martha Graham Dance Company will present a special GrahamDeconstructed event celebrating the 86th anniversary of Primitive Mysteries, one of Graham's most revolutionary works. This stark, ritualistic dance reflects on the purity found in the virgin myths of the Southwest. It was hailed a masterpiece at its premiere and is a prime example of Graham as a leader in the modernist movement. Primitive Mysteries premiered at the Craig Theatre in New York City on February 2, 1931.
