Short+Sweet Hollywood’s 2025 season has officially concluded, with winners announced during a ceremony on Sunday led by Festival Director Ashley Karp and Producer Soda Persi.

Short+Sweet Hollywood has announced the full slate of finalists for its 2025 season, featuring a mix of returning artists and first-time participants. The festival will present Latin X Finals on November 21, English Finals on November 22, and an Awards Show and Gala on November 23 at the Victory Theatre in Burbank.

The Short+Sweet Hollywood 2025 semi-finalists have been announced, marking what organizers call “one of the best seasons the festival has seen.”

The line-up has been revealed for the first half of the 2025 First Light Festival. Since 1998, the EST/Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Science & Technology Project has developed over 300 plays that challenge and broaden the view of science in the popular imagination.

Ensemble Studio Theatre has announced its 2025-26 line-up, a season committed to new work development through the EST/Sloan Project and the Youngblood emerging playwrights collective as well as two new plays.

I’ve been writing about the lack of female representation in creative teams for at least 15 years. When I wrote a series on female playwrights a couple of years back, there was a sense that things were getting better. Indeed, when Julia Jordan handed off leadership of the Lillys in December 2023, she proudly reported that gender parity had been reached on off-Broadway stages dedicated to new plays. There was even talk of sunsetting the organization, which has been a driving force in the fight for gender parity.
