The 2019 MAKERS Conference kicked-off last night with a first look at the upcoming Broadway play What the Constitution Means to Me from playwright Heidi Schreck. The show explores how Shreck's teenage self and four generations of females all relate to the founding document and imagine how it will shape the next generation of American women.

New York Theatre Workshop (NYTW) announced today that Jeremy O. Harris (Slave Play, "Daddy") and Heidi Schreck (the Broadway-bound What the Constitution Means to Me), the playwrights behind NYTW's two sold-out fall productions, will co-host the NYTW 2019 Gala celebrating 40 Years of New York Theatre Workshop and honoring Founding Trustee Stephen Graham.

Five-time Obie Award-winning theater company Clubbed Thumb (Maria Striar, Producing Artistic Director; Michael Bulger, Associate Artistic Director; Quinn Metal Corbin, Advancement Director) is proud to announce the return of Will Arbery's PLANO, directed by Taylor Reynolds. First seen last year in the 23rd SUMMERWORKS season, PLANO returns beginning April 8 for a limited engagement through May 11. The Susan Smith Blackburn Prize has announced 10 Finalists for its prestigious playwriting Award, the oldest and largest prize awarded to women playwrights.

PAGE 73 PRODUCTIONS has named Sanaz Toossi the 2019 Page 73 Playwriting Fellow. Selected from nearly 400 applicants, Toossi will receive a $10,000 award and an additional $10,000 budgeted for developing several new plays over the course of the year.

Arlington's newest professional theatre company, Prologue Theatre, is launching its inaugural season in January 2019 with Heidi Schreck's Grand Concourse. This intimate four-character play challenges audiences to consider a variety of perspectives as the lives of Shelley, Emma, Oscar, and Frog intersect at a Bronx soup kitchen. The production will be performed at the Key Bridge Marriott, 1401 Lee Hwy, Arlington, VA 22209, from January 24 to February 17, 2019. Performances will begin at 8 pm on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and at 2 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

In a season full of new Broadway plays, there may be room for one, or two, more. According to Michael Riedel of The New York Post, Heidi Schreck's 'What the Constitution Means to Me' is moving from off-Broadway to the Helen Hayes in March.

And while controversial issues are more frequently discussed Off-Broadway, 2018 saw a great many political and social themes brought up throughout Manhattan's stages. We have a lot of new plays on Broadway this season. Thirteen are currently set. There are also seven play revivals. Two of the new plays were written by women--both produced by non-profits and both already closed. Not one revival is of a play written by a woman.

New York Theatre Workshop (NYTW) (Artistic Director James C. Nicola and Managing Director Jeremy Blocker) announced today that due to high demand, the world premiere of Slave Play by Jeremy O. Harris (Daddy, Zola), directed by two-time Obie Award winner Robert O'Hara (Bootycandy), will run for an additional two weeks. Originally scheduled to play its final performance on December 30, 2018, Slave Play will now play additional performances through Sunday January 13, 2019. Slave Play began previews on Monday, November 19, 2018 and will open Sunday, December 9 at New York Theatre Workshop (79 E. 4th Street New York, NY 10003).
