Prior to next week’s arrival of the film-inspired musical MEAN GIRLS to Proctors, I spoke with Lindsay Heather Pearce, who recently took over the role of Janis on tour. Her resume includes some notable television and theater credits, including her participation on The Glee Project/Glee and her Broadway debut as Elphaba in WICKED.
Actors Collaborative Toledo and The Village Players Theatre will collaborate to present a duo of area premieres in July on The Village Players stage. Ben Hur by Patrick Barlow will be performed on July 22-24 and Rocket Man by Steven Dietz will be performed on July 29-31.

For me, musical adaptations of movies can be either a hit or miss with no in-between. I am happy to say that the musical version of Mean Girls, based on the cult classic 2004 movie, was maybe more fun than the movie itself.
The mean girls are back in action, and this time you can sit with them! The hit Broadway musical Mean Girls is taking up residence at the Orpheum Theater in downtown Omaha and my ears are still ringing from the thunderous applause and cheers that met the cast as they bowed, following an electric performance earlier this week.
Broadway's Mean Girls is at Wharton Center in East Lansing until this Sunday, March 6th. Based on the 2004 movie, Mean Girls premiered on Broadway back in 2018 and it went on to be nominated for 12 Tony Awards.
Debuting in St. Louis, this touring version of Mean Girls is an exhilarating tale of adolescent angst that celebrates individuality and equality. An altogether enjoyable theatrical experience, Mean Girls sits at the head of the class, sending other film-to-stage musicals to detention.
In 2022, Wisconsin is trying to make “fetch” happen with performances of Broadway’s National Tour of Mean Girls happening at Marcus Performing Arts Center (Jan. 25-30), Fox Cities Performing Arts Center (Week of Aug. 22) and Overture Center for the Arts (Aug. 30-Sep. 4).

Originally scheduled to play at the Eccles Theater in August 2020, the national tour of MEAN GIRLS was absolutely worth the wait. Stuffed to the brim with laugh out loud jokes, earwormy songs, and introspective moments, and boasting top notch performances and production values, it is yet another Broadway-caliber touring production gifted to the Utah theatre community by Broadway at the Eccles.
Back in 2004, Tina Fey brought us the movie “Mean Girls”, a cute little teen comedy that could have been just another blip in a bevy of teen comedies were it not for the stellar writing of Ms. Fey and a killer cast. Because of that, the movie has become a bit of a classic in the genre. A shining example of how to do it right. Then Fey, along with husband Jeff Richmond for the music and Nell Benjamin for the lyrics chose to convert her classic into a Broadway Musical. They brought over all that stellar writing from the movie, and that’s part of the problem. The other part of the problem is that the new elements, the music and lyrics, don’t quite live up to the writing. So, what we’re left with is a faded carbon copy of the original that while still fun, isn’t quite as “Fetch” as the original.
Reprising their roles from the 2019-2020 season are Danielle Wade as Cady Heron, Megan Masako Haley as Gretchen Wieners, Jonalyn Saxer as Karen Smith, Mary Kate Morrissey as Janis Sarkisian, Eric Huffman as Damian Hubbard, Adante Carter as Aaron Samuels, Kabir Bery as Kevin G. and Lawrence E. Street as Mr. Duvall.
A tribute to adolescent angst and nerd revenge fantasies, MEAN GIRLS is a satisfying, hilarious musical adaptation of Tina Fey's 2004 comedy. It's an entertaining (if guilty) pleasure propelled by superb video design, skilled comedians all over the stage, and its fun (if disposable) score. The hit musical has resumed its National Tour, re-premiering in Tempe's Gammage Auditorium and the energy in the theatre is palpable. The performers are clearly bursting to perform and the audience is eager to watch.
