During this time when productions all over the world have been put on pause, we are coming together to celebrate plays that have left their mark on theater history. This week we will be focusing on the plays of Tracy Letts. Today's play, Mary Page Marlowe!
With the exception of those specifically dedicated to making it their mission, there isn't a theatre company in New York whose output contains such a high percentage of productions by women playwrights as The Mint.
Just last night, Second Stage Theater celebrated its 32nd annual All-Star Bowling Classic. For over 30 years, stars of stage and screen have come out to bowl in support of Second Stage's award-winning seasons and to assist the theatre in its fund-raising efforts.
Meet Miss Baker has begun, with previews of The Price of Thomas Scott, directed by Mint Theater Artistic Director Jonathan Bank. Performances began January 24th and continue through March 23rd at Theatre Row (410 West 42nd Street). Opening Night is set for February 20th.
Mint announced "Meet Miss Baker," Mint's latest effort in its ongoing commitment to create new life for neglected women playwrights. From Pulitzer-Prize winning plays by Zona Gale and Susan Glaspell, to forgotten works by Rachel Crothers, Cicely Hamilton, Githa Sowerby, Hazel Ellis, Maurine Dallas Watkins, Lillian Hellman, Rose Franken and Dawn Powell, Mint has long been a champion of neglected plays by women. Up next is English playwright Elizabeth Baker, who will receive three productions, each getting their American premiere, over the next two years.
'If life were only moments, then you'd never know you had one,' sings a character from Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's INTO THE WOODS while pondering whether the intimate encounter she just experienced would turn out to be of lifelong meaning or just a barely significant distraction.

All too often, the word dated is misguidedly used to diminish the impact a play of a bygone era can have on contemporary audiences. Take, for example, the puritanical attitude towards pre-marital sex expressed by many of the characters in English playwright Stanley Houghton's social commentary, HINDLE WAKES, which premiered in Manchester in 1912 and crossed the ocean to Broadway before the year was done.
Mint Theater presents a rare revival - the first in 95 years - of Stanley Houghton's Hindle Wakes. Performances continue through February 17th at the Clurman Theater at Theatre Row (410 West 42nd Street). Opening Night is tonight, January 18th.
