Ian Finkel, the World's Greatest Xylophonist and Elliot Finkel, concert pianist extraordinaire offered a first-hand account of the incredible career of their father Fyvush Finkel last night in a touching memorial at the Metropolitan Room. Fyvush had been performing in English and Yiddish roles for nine decades before his passing this summer. His last engagement was at Mr. Finn's Cabaret in the Berkshires, and he had invited the cheering audience at the end of the show to come to his 94th birthday celebration on Oct 9th at the Metropolitan Room. The evening instead was celebration of his life on stage with the performances by family and friends performing his songs, stories, and jokes. To quote one of Fyvush's jokes, if he were present he would have opened the evening by saying, "I'm celebrating my 94th birthday today!" after the applause died down he would then look around and continue…."but I realize looking at this audience, it's no big deal!"
Barrington Stage Company (BSC), the award-winning theatre in Downtown Pittsfield, MA, under the leadership of Artistic Director Julianne Boyd and Managing Director Tristan Wilson, is proud to announce Tony Award-winner William Finn's return to host the popular Songs by Ridiculously Talented Composers and Lyricists You Probably Don't Know, But Should... on the Boyd-Quinson Mainstage June 10 and 11 at 8:00pm.
Fyvush Finkel, 93 year old Broadway veteran, Yiddish Theater star, movie and TV actor was accompanied by his two sons Ian and Elliot Finkel and opened at the Metropolitan Room last night. BroadwayWorld was there, along with many actors, musicians, and comics, who turned out to see the legendary performer take the packed room on an emotional musical journey with some hysterical humor, wonderful singing, and brilliant character acting by Mr. Finkel. Ian Finkel who is billed as the world's greatest xylophonist, more then lives up to that title with his virtuoso exciting style, and along with powerful piano interpretations by Elliot Finkel, the show is a great musical experience.
?The Emmy Award winning actor Fyvesh Finkel jokes, 'I'm 92, but looking at this audience I realize that's no big deal.' Fyvesh was the star of Yiddish Night at the Friars Club last night, although his co-stars were his sons Elliot, Ian, and the special menu of traditional Jewish favorites prepared by the staff.
It was an emotional and touching night for lovers of Pastrami, Corned Beef, Lox, White Fish, Blintzes, Pickles, Cole Slaw and Mustard at the Friars last night. Cohen Media Group had the screening of The Movie Deliman in the Milton Berle Room. This film by Erik Greenberg Anjou celebrates 160 years of tradition and great stories by the Jewish Deli owners, operators and fanatics who are keeping the lox sliced thin and the Pastrami hot in the Jewish delicatessens that are still thriving around the world. Besides the food, Ziggy Gruber, operator of Kenny and Ziggy's in Houston, Texas is the star of this funny and heartwarming documentary. The film reflects the heart of a vital ethnic history. It's also a love story, not just about the food, but about the preservation of family, laughter and community that remains a fundamental part of a trip to a Jewish Delicatessen. What better place to see the wonderful film than the Friars Club were those traditions are celebrated every day. After the talk back with Ziggy Gruber, Fyvesh Finkel and Erik Greenberg Anjou, maitre d' Giuseppe Tarillo welcomed everyone into the Frank Sinatra Dinning Room. I guess that's what you call Jewish Fusion. It's great "having what the Friars were having".
