NVC Presents LEAVING HOME With Malcolm Gets, Kirsten Scott and More, 6/10

The New Voices Collective will present the world premiere of Leaving Home - a triple bill of three one-act musicals with music by Jonathan Larson Award-winner Sam Davis (Bunnicula) and book and lyrics by Drama Desk-nominee Sean Hartley (Cupid and Psyche). Edward Hibbert & Wesley Taylor to Lead THE SILVER CORD at Peccadillo Theater Company

According to a casting notcice, Edward Hibbert and Wesley Taylor have signed on to star in an upcoming off-Broadway revival of Sidney Howard's 1926 play THE SILVER CORD at The Peccadillo Theater Company. A staged reading for the show was held in January featuring Tayor alongside Charles Busch Dan Wackerman, Jessie Austrian, Molly Camp, and Robert Eli. The production will run May 15 through June 23.

Review - The Sound of Music

Yes, I'll say it.  The 1959 Broadway stage version of The Sound of Music is far superior to 1965 film adaptation.  Yeah, yeah, I know…  The Oscar-winning best picture has all that lovely Austrian and Bavarian scenery and those cute kids and, oh yeah, Julie Andrews as the young postulant, Maria, sent to serve as governess to the seven children of Naval Captain Georg Ludwig von Trapp.  But it also has a watered-down screenplay by Ernest Lehman that cuts two of the best songs in Rodgers and Hammerstein's score and eliminates one of the most interesting aspects of Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse's original book; the depiction of nice, likeable Austrians who, unaware of the full extent of Hitler's atrocities, argue against resistance of the German overthrow of their country.  The stage musical even includes an important scene, altered in the film, where a Nazi in uniform commits a selfless act of compassion that helps rescue the von Trapps.

Paper Mill Playhouse Collecting Extra Coats, Halloween Candy for Distribution; Opens Free Charging Station

Paper Mill Playhouse is proud to partner with Jersey Cares as a collection site for their winter coat drive. Furthermore, area residents are encouraged to drop off their undistributed Halloween candy to the Paper Mill Playhouse Box Office now until Friday, November 16th. All candy collected will be sent to troops serving our country. The Paper Mill Playhouse Lobby is now open to area residents, noon until 5:00pm, seven-days-a-week to charge electronic devices.

Paper Mill Playhouse (Mark S. Hoebee- Producing Artistic Director, Todd Schmidt-Managing Director) has just announced the cast for its holiday musical masterpiece, The Sound of Music. One of the most beloved and inspirational stories of all time, this tale of love and courage is Rodgers and Hammerstein's final triumphant collaboration. Directed and choreographed by Paper Mill Playhouse favorite James Brennan, The Sound of Music will bring families of all ages together this holiday season. Leading the cast are Ben Davis as Captain Georg von Trapp, Elena Shaddow as Maria von Trapp, Edward Hibbert as Max, Chelsea Morgan Stock as Liesl and X as Rolf. The Sound of Music will run at the Millburn, New Jersey, theater from November 23 to December 30, 2012. The official press opening is Sunday, November 25, at 7:00pm.

Monday night's "Classical Julie," starring the inimitable Julie Halston, was one of the all-time best nights in the History of Halston, let alone the history of the Broadway at Birdland series, and comedy in general. (Her portrayal of Lady MacBeth, as played by Little Edie Beal, will be imitated for years to come!) Some of the smartest and funniest people in showbiz swarmed to see her, including Edward Hibbert, Harriet Harris, Hunter Ryan Herdlicka, Amy Rutberg, Louise DuArt & SQuire Rushnell, Mike Doyle, Mary Testa, Richie Ridge, Richard Hillman, Natalie Douglas, and a boatload of her beloved Anything Goes cast members. The evening was directed by Carl Andress.
