How much would you pay for a white painting? This odd question sparks a firestorm in Yasmina Reza's Tony and Olivier Award winning comedic masterpiece about the lives of three old friends, the meaning of art and life, and the lengths we go a?" however, joyful, painful, or maddening a?" to protect those we care about. Marc's friend, Serge has bought a white painting. Simple. But to Marc, the painting is a joke and he expresses that fully. Serge doesn't take this reaction well, and confronts Marc on many things, among those, his lack of standards to judge art. And so, the battle begins. Another friend, the hapless Yvan, gets pulled into the quarrel, whose tepid attempts at peacemaking only add fuel to the fire, and a hilarious-yet-poignant battle ensues that threatens to destroy their friendship. 'ART' is an intelligent play about a simple piece of art becoming an external representation of inner values; the perfect marriage between Moliere and Woody Allen, a nonstop crossfire of crackling language, biting humor, and the fragile, feeling hearts that make us who we are. Called a?oeone of the best contemporary comedies, period!a??

Casting is set for Studio Theatre's production of Pipeline, playwright Dominique Morisseau's searing drama about the school-to-prison pipeline and a mother desperately trying to keep her son from becoming ensnared in it. The production runs January 15-February 16, 2020 and is directed by Awoye Timpo. Starring are DC theatre favorite Justin Weaks (Studio's Curve of Departure) as high school student Omari and Andrea Harris Smith making her Studio debut as his mother, public school teacher Nya. In its recent People Issue, Washington City Paper's called Weaks a 'standout,' going on to say: 'D.C. theater audiences love Justin Weaks. ...Weaks came to D.C. for a job about four years ago, not expecting to stay. But he kept getting cast in shows, and lucky for local theatergoers, he's still here.'

Michael Mullen works onstage and behind the scenes. He is a superb costumer and an equally marvelous actor. In our conversation he talks about his 7 BWW Award nominations and overall about the joy of being in the theatre. How does it feel to be nominated four times for a BWW Award for costuming? MM: It feels really cool to be nominated for 4 BWW Awards for Costume Design. I loved working on all 4 of the shows. It was fun to delve into the 1930s with She Loves Me. I love the Victorian period which I got to do with The Importance Of Being Earnest. The Elizabethan period is one of my favorite time periods which we set The Merchant Of Venice in. And Roots was a series of 4 one-act shows that allowed me to create costumes from modern day to Peter The Great to Ayn Rand to a comedic cockroach.
