Rags the Musical was a flop when it first opened on Broadway in 1986. Which is why, one suspects, it kept on receiving a series of revisions over the subsequent decades. The most recent of these is now on display in Bronagh Lagan's assured production at the Park Theatre, first performed at Manchester's Hope Mill Theatre in March 2019. David Thompson's revised book, Stephen Schwartz' poignant lyrics, and Charles Strouse's eclectic music (with echoes of ragtime and jazz) join forces to present a fluent rags-to-riches story, but even this reimagined version remains far too formulaic in its portrayal of a group of Jewish immigrants in the 1910's New York.
All in all Annie is fairly good musical full of surprises, not to mention its humane approach to life: Magical things can happen to us, but if the little details you've longed for so long don't match, it's more than okay to feel sad, though it might feel wrong in the first hand. In the end, tomorrow's only a day away anyways. I love you, tomorrow... And I love you, Vaskivuori!
West End stars Alice Fearn and Emma Hatton will, for one night only, star in The Spark of Creation, a Gala Fundraiser celebrating the work of Stephen Schwartz, at Park Theatre, London on Sunday 19 January. Broadway's original Annie, Andrea McArdle will reunite with members of the original Broadway at TV cast in THE 1977 ANNIE CHRISTMAS SHOW TV SPECIAL: LIVE! In Concert, honoring the show's Tony Award winning creator, Martin Charnin, to benefit The Actors Fund. There will be one performance only, at 9:30 on Monday, December 16th, at The Cutting Room. The 1977 Best Musical and TV iconic TV both special feature lyrics by Martin Charnin, music by Charles Strouse, and book by Thomas Meehan.

Citadel Theatre Company has extended the run of its 2019 holiday season production of ANNIE by two weeks, to Sunday, January 5th, giving audiences the chance to enjoy this ever-popular family favorite throughout the holiday season.
