After its premiere in London in 1960 and in New York in 1963, Oliver! Is still a classic and considered one of the finest musical scores in a Broadway show. Rivertown Theaters is proud to present this hit musical to start the year 2020 January 10 - 26 on the Mainstage.
the Open Book Theatre, New York City's oldest readers theatre company, will present two heartwarming holiday shows this December: 'A Confused Hanukkah,' at 2 p.m. on Dec. 23, 26 and 27; and 'The Last Christmas of Ebenezer Scrooge,' at 7 p.m. on Dec. 22, 23 and 29. Both plays will be performed at Pushkin Hall, 165 W. 86th St., 2nd Floor.
On Thursday, December 19, for one night only, a beloved Christmas classic will call Oxford Exchange home. Performed in the thrust setting around the Oxford Exchange atrium fountain, A Dickens Courtyard Christmas is director Matthew Belopavlovich's second collaboration with the venue. He will bring the holiday tale to life using the venue's gorgeous backdrop as inspiration.
Mile Square Theatre, Hudson County's leading professional theatre, presents a reading of A SHERLOCK CAROL, a new play by Mark Shanahan (The Dingdong, A Merry Little Christmas Carol) on December 17th.
There are so many Christmas traditions I can think of that hold a special place in my heart. Decorating the tree, the first snow, the lights at Lindenwood Park, Home Alone, It's a Wonderful Life, Die Hard and of course the Charles Dickens Classic story of Ebenezer Scrooge. It's probably been 20 years since I have seen a stage production of this but I always try to find the classic movie to watch every year. I was beyond excited to see this show on the FMCT schedule and as usual they do not disappoint.
God Bless us, everyone! My childhood came back to me while witnessing the holiday classic A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. This annual production by Actors Theatre of Louisville hit all the high notes on opening night and delivered a magical feast for the eyes, ears, and heart. After four decades this production still thrills and delivers the message of redemption and kindness from the past, present, and future. I was so happy to experience it among many families and I especially enjoyed hearing and seeing children's reactions to the show.
It's almost Christmas, so you need a book that takes place on Christmas Eve today, right!? THE AFTERLIFE OF HOLLY CHASE by Cynthia Hand is a perfect choice this month. While not a retelling of Charles Dickens' famous A CHRISTMAS CAROL, it's very much inspired by the classic novel.
A close friend recently told me there was no cure for climate change. Too many people are on the planet. He theorized the solution was to eliminate two-thirds of the world's population. Ebenezer Scrooge also shares the same sentiment. If the sick and downtrodden cannot survive then they will help 'decrease the surplus population.' A Christmas Carol in Harlem updates Charles Dickens' classic novella into modern times with a socially contemplative spin.
At its most fundamental, theater is a group of people coming together to tell a story in front of an audience. In its earliest days, that's all it was, basic and pure, without any need for today's technological lights and sounds (not that there's anything wrong with those). Contemporary Theater Company's production of A Christmas Carol similarly keeps it simple, bringing a group of players to the stage to let them work together to tell the audience a timeless yet still magical story.
DOLLY PARTON'S SMOKY MOUNTAIN CHRISTMAS CAROL delivers on the simplicity of its message of faith, family, and love, especially during the holiday season, and is a reflection of the heritage and values of its namesake. On opening night, the acclaimed country singer-songwriter surprised and delighted the audience by making an appearance onstage before the show, but the main event couldn't compete with Dolly's star wattage.
Lantern Theater Company continues the 2019/20 season with a remount of its original adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, commissioned and developed through the Lantern's New Play Program and co-created by Philadelphia-based artists Anthony Lawton, Christopher Colucci, and Thom Weaver.
From December 11th-22nd, Theatre in the Park will be presenting their 45th anniversary production of A Christmas Carol. I recently had the great pleasure of interviewing the show's playwright, Ira David Wood III, who is not only back directing this year, but he'll also be alternating the role of Ebenezer Scrooge with his oldest son, Ira David Wood IV.
The Q Brothers Collective puts a highly inventive and endlessly delightful twist on Charles Dickens' classic holiday tale with Q BROTHERS CHRISTMAS CAROL.
Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol places Ebenezer Scrooge centre-stage, shoving all its female characters to the side in an attempt to paint a deeply unfair and harrowing picture of London's Victorian society. The protagonist has been an immovable presence in theatres around Christmas time from the same year the novella was published, establishing Scrooge as a historically male role. That is, until now.
