John Calvin Abney to Release Self-Produced LP 'Safe Passage' Next Friday
by Abigail Charpentier
- Sep 19, 2019
John Calvin Abney is set to return with his self-produced LP Safe Passage on Tulsa's Black Mesa Records next Friday, September 27. Originally announced via Wide Open Country with a premiere of lead single 'Turn Again,' Safe Passage follows 2018's Coyote, which Rolling Stone Country called “dreamy folk with a good balance of sadness and sunshine.” For the new record, Abney tapped an impressive set of musicians for his studio band: fellow Tulsa Americana artist John Moreland, Shonna Tucker (John Paul White, Drive-by Truckers), Will Johnson (Centro-matic, Monsters of Folk), violinist/vocalist Megan Palmer, David Leach (John Fullbright, Jason Eady), and drummer Bryan McGrath. Together they bring to life songs that tend to look for light in the face of tragedy, worry, or self-imposed struggle. Songs such as album opener, 'I Just Want To Feel Good,' which premiered at The Bluegrass Situation this week. Abney offered, 'This song was written in a short 20-minute nova of inspiration. I had a nagging cold while up at altitude, staying in a cabin by myself in Colorado, and dodging my troubles through travel and wine. I grew tired of being a people pleaser in order to dodge conflict (the real superficial kind) and was chasing the shadow of happiness in the wake of the real thing.'

John Calvin Abney Announces New LP SAFE PASSAGE Due Out 9/27
by Tori Hartshorn
- Jul 12, 2019
John Calvin Abney is set to return with a self-produced new LP Safe Passage via Black Mesa Records on September 27, 2019. It's the follow-up to 2018's Coyote, which Rolling Stone Country called “dreamy folk with a good balance of sadness and sunshine.” From the start of Safe Passage's gentle opener, Abney draws a line between himself and the expectations of others. “I just want to feel good,” he sings softly, setting the tone for the album's cyclical narrative, a ten-song exploration of happiness and self-acceptance and grace. This introspection continues and bleeds heavy on the album's lead single, “Turn Again,” featured today at Wide Open Country. They state, 'The fiddle-driven tune finds value in starting anew and being kind to yourself when you're staring down a road leading to old habits.'

NJs Garage Rock Icons The Doughboys Releasing RUNNING FOR COVERS Album
by Tori Hartshorn
- Jun 20, 2019
The Doughboys proudly present their sixth studio album, Running For Covers, 13 brilliant new tracks from the band whose career spans pretty much all the decades rock'n'roll has been in existence. They once again worked at the House of Vibes with producerengineer Kurt Reil, and staged a return to their roots as among the finest interpreters of classic garage rock standards, harkening back to their days as one of the most popular bands in central Jersey in the mid 60's. They dig deep to find lesser-known gems of luminaries like the Kinks, The Band, The Stones, Herman's Hermits and the Fab Four. Then they venture further to unearth outside-genre nuggets from the likes of Lambert Hendricks & Ross, Mose Allison and Neil Diamond, stamping all the tracks with their trademark hoppin' grooves and riffs galore. Hey, they're even covering themselves - infusing new renditions of the A-sides of their two singles for Bell Records with the benefit of their collective years of musical experience and wisdom. The album is being released June 28 by Ram Records.
