BroadwayWorld Books frequently chronicles the path books take as they're picked up for the silver screen, television, or streaming services. In recent years, Netflix has been aggressively perusing bookstores to find the next successful series. This past month, the Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski did so well, the publisher broke stock and the books are on back-order. Netflix just announced a long list of movies coming out on its platform in 2020, and many of them are book adaptations.

Focus Features is set to partner with writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson on his untitled new film. Anderson and Focus Features collaborated on his last feature Phantom Thread, which garnered 6 Academy Award® nominations including Best Picture, Director for Anderson, Actor for Daniel Day-Lewis, Supporting Actress for Lesley Manville, Score for Jonny Greenwood and Costume Design for Mark Bridges, which he went on to win. Longtime collaborators JoAnne Sellar and Daniel Lupi will produce this new project along with Anderson.

The nonprofit Sundance Institute announced today the showcase of new independent feature films selected across all categories for the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. The Festival hosts screenings in Park City, Salt Lake City and at Sundance Mountain Resort, from January 23a?"February 2, 2020. The Sundance Film Festival is Sundance Institute's flagship public program, widely regarded as the largest American independent film festival and attended by more than 120,000 people and 1,300 accredited press, and powered by more than 2,000 volunteers last year.

Following the sold-out run at Park Theatre, London, full casting has been announced for the first national tour of The Last Temptation of Boris Johnson, the new political comedy from journalist, broadcaster and playwright Jonathan Maitland (An Audience with Jimmy Savile, Dead Sheep). Directed by Dugald Bruce-Lockheart, the tour will begin at Festival Theatre, Malvern on 22 January 2020.

The Costume Designers Guild announced today that Academy Award-winner Charlize Theron will be honored with the Spotlight Award, Academy Award-winning screenwriter, director and producer Adam McKay will be bestowed the Distinguished Collaborator Award, and former owner of Bill Hargate Costumes Mary Ellen Fields will receive the Distinguished Service Award at the 22nd CDGA (Costume Designers Guild Awards). Modern Love, which debuted globally on Prime Video on October 18, is inspired by the popular The New York Times column of the same name. The series explores love in all of its complicated and beautiful forms, as each standalone episode brings some of the column's most beloved stories to life with a stellar cast.
