Theatre Washington Launches Virtual Bucket Brigade

Theatre people pre-date the gig economy.  Itinerant performers entertained villages centuries before the first theatre building was constructed.  And Shakespeare's Globe Theatre often had to lay off the whole company because of epidemics of plague.  Now, in the Washington, DC area, ninety theatre companies have had to cease operations because of covid-19.  Many of those who work in them as actors, designers, lighting, sound, and costume staff, directors, and box office personnel do not have benefits such as sick leave and health insurancea?'they just get paid show to show.  Fifty productions had to be cancelled and twenty more, which were about to open, never will.

Washington Theatre to Honor Victor Shargai

The Washington theatre community remains in mourning over the loss of Victor Shargai, long-time theatreWashington board chair, theater lover, and philanthropist, who passed away peacefully at home on December 24, 2019. For decades, Victor dedicated himself to celebrating theater artists and strengthening the theater institutions in the Washington D.C. region. As a champion and a supporter, he believed fervently in theater's power to transform lives and communities.

Jennifer L. Nelson Will Receive The Helen Hayes Tribute

At the 35th annual Helen Hayes Awards on Monday, May 13 at The Anthem, actress, director, playwright, leader, and professor Jennifer L. Nelson will receive the 2019 Helen Hayes Tribute. Nelson has dedicated her artistic life to increasing access and inclusion of traditionally marginalized theatre artists largely in the Washington area region, and was a Helen Hayes Award recipient for her original play Torn from the Headlines, which received the Charles MacArthur Award for Outstanding New Play in 1997.

Theater J Announces New Managing Director

Theater J, the nation's pre-eminent professional Jewish theater, is delighted to announce that Jojo Ruf will become its new Managing Director on January 28, 2019. Ruf joins Artistic Director Adam Immerwahr in the leadership of the theater, which is a program of the Edlavitch DC Jewish Community Center (EDCJCC). Ruf comes to Theater J from The Laboratory for Global Performance and Politics (The Lab) at Georgetown University, where she has been serving as Managing Director since 2015. She is a nationally-recognized field leader with particular expertise in international collaborations and new play development.

2018 Helen Hayes Awards Will Be A Celebration of DC's Professional Theatre Community

The 34th Annual Helen Hayes Awards will take place on Monday, May 14, 2018 at The Anthem, the cultural center of Southwest D.C.'s new District Wharf, with a celebratory party to follow. Esteemed Washington theatre artists Michael J. Bobbitt, five-time Helen Hayes Award nominee, choreographer and Artistic Director of Adventure Theatre MTC, and Alyssa Wilmoth Keegan, recipient of last year's Outstanding Lead Actress in a Play-Hayes Production for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, will host an evening showcasing the vibrant and diverse community of professional theatre artists in the Washington region. There are 258 Helen Hayes Award nominations-selected from 202 eligible productions from 64 theatres in 2017. Tickets for the event are $100 for reserved seating and $275 for VIP premium seating. Reduced-priced tickets will be available to artists and administrators in the community at an industry rate, subsidized by Artist Supporter tickets. All tickets are now available for purchase through the theatreWashington website.

Nominations Announced for the 2018 Helen Hayes Awards; MEAN GIRLS, FUN HOME, and More!

The nominees for the 2018 Helen Hayes Awards were announced on February 5, 2018. One of the country's most prestigious cultural honors, The Helen Hayes Awards recognizes and celebrates excellence in professional theatre throughout the Washington metropolitan area. The National Theatre's Helen Hayes Gallery set the scene for the announcement of nominees in 47 categories for artistic excellence, and the theatre companies eligible for the 2017 John Aniello Award for Outstanding Emerging Theatre Company. The recipient of the 2018 Helen Hayes Tribute will be announced shortly.

TheatreWashington and Signature Theatre have announced the 6th annual Summer Hummer, a burlesque-style fundraiser featuring some of DC's best and hottest performers. Summer Hummer VI: Prom Night will be held Monday, August 28 at Signature Theatre with two exclusive one-night-only performances at 7:30 PM and 9:30 PM.

Community Celebration Takes Center Stage at 2017 Helen Hayes Awards

The 33rd annual Helen Hayes Awards will be celebrated at the historicLincoln Theatre at 7:30 pm on May 15, with accomplished actors E. Faye Butler and Lawrence Redmond as hosts. The line-up of award presenters includes artistic leaders from across the Washington region, highlighting the depth and breadth of a theatre community recognized worldwide for the quality and diversity of its work. Following the awards, a roof-raising dance party gets underway at the world-renowned 9:30 Club. Both events honor 236 Helen Hayes Award nominees drawn from 200 eligible productions presented in 2016. Tickets for the combined Awards Ceremony and Dance Party are $275 for premium seating, $150 for balcony seating, and can be purchased online.
