Review: FREDDIE: A GIRL at Taffety Punk Theatre Company

Freddie: A Girl (now being presented by the Taffety Punk Theatre Company) is a triumph of theatrical form over content. The subject of resistance fighters against the Nazis in World War II is obviously a fraught and very serious business especially in these polarized times-- but Director Lise Bruneau and the Playwright Kelsey Mesa have subverted the material into a thrilling, pulpy, and brightly- colored panoply of moods and episodic high-adrenaline impressions. Each scene in this uniquely interesting play highlight the often-contradictory demands of standing up to do what is right no matter what the cost. Bravery in the realm of doing what is right requires constant drive and dedication but this fact is not presented via linear stereotypical tropes but, rather, via constant almost-impressionistic episodic action.

Growing with Fefu and Her Friends just reminded me to think about my performance in the larger contact of us, an ensemble. In rehearsal, we come together to learn, fail, heal, and grow. I think that's the most important thing I take away from this production. Rehearsals are about becoming stronger together. It's the only way to put on a successful show.

Taffety Punk Theatre Company's Bootleg Shakespeare production HENRY VI, PART 3 is performance without a net - exciting, dangerous, riveting, and raw. Bootleg Shakespeare isn't designed to be polished or perfect, it's designed to be fresh and immediate. And it delivered. What's more amazing? The actors arrived at 10:00 am Monday with roles assigned and lines memorized. That's it. Working together under the direction of Taffety Punk Artistic Director Marcus Kyd, over the next few hours the 32 actors DIY'ed the production and were on stage in front of an audience at 7:30 pm. There were minimal props, lights, and costumes-but the red and white paper lapel flowers told us exactly what we needed to know when every epic battle scene and every word of Shakespeare's text was performed.

Hailed by critics as an 'an Our Town for our time,' this play is by turns poetic and comic, romantic and philosophical. Peter returns to his twenty-year high-school reunion with dreams of winning back Kari, the girl he left behind after an unexpected pregnancy ended their relationship. Standing in Peter's way is Kari's bitter-as-ever resentment, her husband and the fact that Peter still hasn't grown up. As the night progresses, both Peter and Kari are led, through their interactions with a host of characters all played by a virtuosic Narrator, to face the consequences of choices made long ago and start back into life with newfound strength and bittersweet resolve.
