Review: TRIUMPH OF LOVE at Shotgun Players

What did our critic think of TRIUMPH OF LOVE at Shotgun Players? Founding Artistic Director Patrick Dooley has a huge hit on his hands with a superb production of Pierre De Marivaux's 18th century three-act romantic comedy. A flop in 1732 due to the inappropriateness of the gender-bending love triangles, the play later became a hit as a 1997 musical and a later film adaptation. Dooley stays true to the Stephen Wadsworth translation and the production is reinforced by a sensational ensemble cast.

BWW Review: CIRCLE MIRROR TRANSFORMATION at Phoenix Theatre

Annie Baker said she wanted to explore her characters through artificial acting exercises in a dull, windowless little space involving excruciating silences. Through the vehicle of a 6-week Adult Creative Drama class the students become trees, inanimate objects, perform modern dance and vocalize using only the words goulash and ak-mak. Director Ciera Eis tries to add some life to this piece through the actors' movements, but the main problem are those excruciating silence and awkward moments of inaction that kill any momentum and sap the viewers' attention.

Ross Valley Players Presents THE ODD COUPLE

The Odd Couple is the late Neil Simon's finest and funniest comedy, and a delicious romp for all. The play won five Tony nominations and four Tony Awards when it debuted on Broadway in 1965, and lived on in film and television adaptations for many years. The hilariously miss-matched apartment mates -divorced and slovenly Oscar and obsessively neat Felix (whose marriage has just dissolved) - are joined by Oscar's poker buddies and a tempting pair of sisters, Cecily and Gwendolyn, who live upstairs. As the NY Times review of the original production stated, 'There is scarcely a moment that is not hilarious.'
