Bay Area Premiere of Bess Wohl's AMERICAN HERO Begins March 7th at Custom Made Theatre

Custom Made Theatre Co. presents the Bay Area Premiere of Bess Wohl's comedy "American Hero" which runs March 7th through April 6th at Custom Made Theatre, 533 Sutter St. in San Francisco, just one block north of Union Square.
"American Hero" is a comic look at life, liberty, and the pursuit of sandwiches.
At a Toasted Subs franchise in the local mall, three up-and-coming "sandwich artists"-a teenager, a single mom, and a downsized refugee from corporate banking-are perfecting the mustard-to-cheese ratio according to the company manual.
But when the owner stops providing the resources to make those perfect lunches, they become unlikely allies in a post-recession world. American Hero is a supersized dark comedy about what's left of the American dream.
American Hero is directed by A.C.T. Artistic Associate/ Literary Manager Allie Moss, who has worked with Custom Made as dramaturg on their Undiscovered Works program. Starring in the dark comedy is a trio of returning CMTC performers including Paul Stout (Slaughterhouse-Five, The Underpants), Laura Espino (In Love & Warcraft), and David Boyll (Kurt Vonnegut's Mother Night). Joining these veterans is newcomer Devon deGroot, who was recently seen locally as Catherine in Proof.
Director Moss says of "American Hero" "(it) exposes the faulty assumptions that underlie the American Dream; namely, that the playing field is level, that everyone starts from the same place, and that everyone works equally hard to achieve the same level of success. "Hero" asks audiences to interrogate the belief that prosperity correlates to genuine struggle, and to consider who really benefits when we believe that our own happiness - which always seems just out of reach - can be achieved by working just a little bit harder."
