BWW Review: Studio Tenn's Holiday Season Offering of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Photo BWW Review: Studio Tenn's Holiday Season Offering of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
by Jeffrey Ellis - Dec 14, 2018

Before Broadway comes calling for Hatty Ryan King, the young Nashville actress with an enviable resume (the Lipscomb University sophomore is a Spotlight Award winner, was a finalist for The Jimmy Award, has worked with theater companies both community-oriented and professional and has proven herself a capable leading player along the way), you might want to get your tickets to see her onstage in Studio Tenn's ambitious, if woefully uneven, holiday season offering of Beauty and The Beast. In a role that could have been written for her, King shines as Belle, the ambitious and eager to learn and to embrace change young woman who is the heroine of the musical which features a score by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice and a book by Linda Woolverton.

BWW Review: Circle Players' Sweeping and Epic HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME Photo BWW Review: Circle Players' Sweeping and Epic HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME
by Jeffrey Ellis - Nov 8, 2017

With a sense of the sweeping epic about it and a darkly romantic story to tell The Hunchback of Notre Dame ( a new musical based on the Victor Hugo novel and songs from the Disney film ) offers an intriguing retelling of the story of Quasimodo, the hideously deformed and often reviled bellringer at Paris' Notre Dame cathedral, and Esmeralda, the fiery, passionate gypsy temptress with whom he becomes infatuated. Although set in the late 15th century, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, what with its themes of religious zealotry and bias and prejudice against an ethnic minority, remains eerily prescient and perhaps frighteningly contemporary given the tenor of the times in which we live.

GOOD MORNING, THEATERATI! It's Thursday, June 1, 2017 - or, as we like to call it #TheaterThursday, 'June is busting out all over…' as a song from Carousel reminds us, and there's no better way to kick off a new month than by planning our theater outings for the weekend! Tomorrow night at Cumberland County Playhouse, the company, cast and crew unveil the 2017 model of Smoke on the Mountain, which marks the 24th year of the musical playing in Crossville. Weslie Webster directs and her cast includes Daniel W. Black and Lauren Marshall as Sanders family father and mother Burl and Vera.

BWW Review: NUNCRACKERS Brings Christmas to The Keeton
by Jeffrey Ellis - Dec 2, 2016

Those wacky sisters of Hoboken are back on the job and back in the theatre in Nuncrackers - writer Dan Goggins' latest installment of the continuing saga of a group of down-on-their-luck nuns from New Jersey who are still trying to beef up their rolls, score some longed-for electronic gadgets and launching a cable access TV channel to hawk their own special brand of must-have holiday gifts - celebrating the Christmas season with a variety show that shows off their own questionable talents, along with those of a group of four children from the school at the Convent of Mount Saint Helen's.

Sometimes it seems there is so much theater happening that it's difficult to keep track of it all. From personal experience, despite all the datebooks, smart phones, tablets, desktop computers and laptops...it's hard to keep everything straight in this wacky business of the show.

BWW Review: Circle Players' CHILDREN OF EDEN
by Jeffrey Ellis - Mar 19, 2016

It would have taken a miracle to save the opening night of Circle Players' Children of Eden - one of the most eagerly anticipated productions of the season in Music City - from the wrath of God: in this case an abysmal sound design that prevented the audience from hearing Lauren Frances Jones' exquisite vocal performance as Eve in the Stephen Schwartz/John Caird musical.
