BWW Review: COME FROM AWAY, Phoenix Theatre

It's a mark of a great show that it seems to speak directly to the present moment, even if that moment is years after its original creation. Come From Away passes that test with flying colours; in its depiction of an international community dealing with a crisis – including, raising a wry audience laugh, stockpiling loo paper – this 9/11 musical has plenty of resonance with our coronavirus times. Except that the world would be a much better place if we all behaved a bit more like the people of Gander.

BWW Review: LEGALLY BLONDE at Paramount Theatre

Paramount Theatre's production of LEGALLY BLONDE-THE MUSICAL lands the familiar tale of sorority-girl-turned-lawyer Elle Woods firmly in 2018, and it works well. Based on the 2001 movie, the musical premiered on Broadway in 2007, and, unlike some stage adaptations of beloved chick flicks, still resonates in today's post-Weinstein world. A strong female protagonist, working hard to achieve her goals, leaves behind toxic relationships and surrounds herself with people who believe in building each other up. While the narrative is empowering, LEGALLY BLONDE never lets the tone get too serious, with plenty of humor, larger-than-life characters, impressive dance numbers, and all the glitz, glam, and 'Omigod's that one would expect from the women of UCLA's Delta Nu.

HOOKMAN Extended Through 6/3

Steep Theatre plunges into the world of horror with their Midwest premiere of Lauren Yee's Hookman. The play, which has been described by Yee as an 'existential slasher-comedy', was directed by the Jeff Award-winner Vanessa Stalling (United Flight 232 - Best Play, Midsize). The production marks Stalling's Steep Theatre directorial debut. ??The cast of Hookman features Karen Rodriguez, Kiayla Ryann, Aja Wiltshire, Sasha Smith, James Doherty, and Mary Tilden.

Her mother warned her about the treacherous hook-handed man hiding in the back seat, but only after a tragic accident could Lexi see the real threat of the hookman. The bitingly funny, edge-of-your-seat scary Hookman is a lethally sharp slasher comedy about grief, adolescence, and the power of the stories we tell each other and ourselves.
