BWW Review: PETER AND THE STARCATCHER at Playhouse On Park

There is something thrilling about discovering the backstory behind a treasured book, film or play. Learning about the origins of a favorite character or the life lessons gained long before they were introduced to you is a special thrill. This unique type of discovery, telling the tale of Peter Pan before he became the boy who would not grow up, is being brought to boisterous life in Playhouse on Park's inaugural production of their 10th season, Rick Elice's PETER AND THE STARCATCHER.

BWW Review: AVENUE Q at Playhouse On Park

As a young child, one of my favorite things to do was sit in front of the television, probably with a bowl of sugary cereal, and see what my friends who lived on Sesame Street were learning (and teaching me) that day. I consider the lessons I learned in my living room as the foundation that my future education was built upon. But what happens when characters like that grow up? Do they still rely upon each other for support and to help work out how to navigate the growing complexity of life? Do they still have helpful lessons to share? And would their style (and humor) grow up with them as well? It is this concept that grounds Robert Lopez, Jeff Marx, and Jeff Whitty's Tony Award winning musical, AVENUE Q, which opens the 9th season at West Hartford's Playhouse on Park.

BWW Reviews: Monomoy's SPELLING BEE Spells Success!

What would happen if one were to switch the first few letters of "amazing" to form a new, exciting word that only certain minds could quickly figure out? Actually, who cares! As long as each of you knows the word's definition and what it implies, there can only be synonyms of the word used to describe Monomoy Theatre's current production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Having never before seen a production of this rather well-known comedy of a musical, letting Monomoy give me a very impressive and lasting first impression was a wonderful was an absolute privilege; I didn't expect anything less from the group, as the amount of talent on stage makes every play and musical performed wonderful, to say the least. Spelling Bee is really something quite special, as such a simple idea for a plot is taken and transformed, through music and rather peculiar characters, into something that will keep audiences laughing for an evening; it is a production that will not have anyone spelling "regret."

BWW Reviews: Monomoy Theater's LEND ME A TENOR

Directed by Francesca James, Lend Me a Tenor is beyond brought - it is more like jolted to life in Monomoy's current production of Ken Ludwig's Tony-winning comedy, and to say that it is anything but brilliant this time around is a severe understatement. It is one of the only productions I have seen in a long time where I was actually dreading the end of the first act, not knowing if it ended as it did or if it was to be continued after intermission; thankfully, Act Two did indeed happen and did anything but disappoint. It is also one of those shows which, after the curtain has closed, persuade people to drag their family and friends to see so that they, too, may understand how epic it truly is. It is a shame that there are only a few performances available to see, but if you are free this Friday or Saturday, Monomoy Theater is where you should be spending some time.
