Palm Beach Dramaworks to Offer Free Student Tickets to WOODY GUTHRIE'S AMERICAN SONG

Palm Beach Dramaworks is delighted to announce that it has received a challenge grant of $6,000 for the purpose of giving free tickets to high school students for performances of Woody Guthrie's American Song. The generous donor wishes to remain anonymous.

PBD's production of Woody Guthrie's American Song has received rave reviews, and critics and audiences alike have been , moved, inspired, and astonished by the power and timeliness of Guthrie's work, most of which dates back to the 1930s and '40s. It was the immediacy of the work, combined with the uplifting spirit of the piece and the stunning performances of the cast, that prompted the $6,000 gift. The donor believes it's important that students experience live theatre and the genius of Woody Guthrie.

The show, conceived by Peter Glazer and orchestrated by Jeff Waxman, features more than two dozen of the legendary balladeer's songs, including "Bound for Glory," "Grand Coulee Dam," "Nine Hundred Miles," "Hard Travelin'," "Union Maid," "Pastures of Plenty," and, of course, his most famous piece, "This Land is Your Land." In addition, all the dialogue was compiled by Glazer from Guthrie's writings. A powerful storyteller and insightful chronicler of America, Guthrie was a wandering troubadour who listened to the people he met in his travels and wrote songs based on what he'd seen and heard. He was a poet of the downtrodden, the voiceless, the powerless, and the forgotten, a humanist who railed against injustice but also celebrated the splendors of this country.

Students can reserve their seats in person, by calling the box office at 561-514-4042, or visiting palmbeachdramaworks.org and using the code STUDENT.

A valid student ID is required when picking up tickets.

The performance schedule is as follows: Evening performances are Thursday at7:30PM, Friday and Saturday at 8PM. Matinees are Saturday and Sunday at 2PM, and Wednesday, July 25 at 2PM. Individual tickets are $75. Student tickets are free. Other discounted tickets may be purchased through the box office. Pay Your Age tickets are available for those 18-40. Tickets for educators and active military are half price with proper ID (other restrictions apply). Group rates for 20 or more are also available.

The Don & Ann Brown Theatre is located in the heart of downtown West Palm Beach, at 201 Clematis Street.
