From an outsider’s perspective, this African-American family lives a normal suburban life. Dad helps mom around the house, the daughter is an overachieving high school student and the son has a loving relationship with his parents. However, through the eyes of the mother’s bipolar disorder and mental health struggles, the family starts to question what the actual definition of “normal” is. Is life just an illusion of beautiful memories? Or do we have to face our inner conflicts in order to gain clarity? In a new concept of this powerful rock musical, the story wrestles with the stigma around mental health in the BIPOC/black community and the effects it has on family dynamics.
Trigger Warnings: This show contains language, and themes of death, grief, drug use, sex, mental health, electroshock therapy, neglect, emotional abuse, and suicide. Due to these themes and situations, this show is not recommended for audiences under 16.

Review: NEXT TO NORMAL by New Generation Theatrical at The Abbey
September 24, 2023 For many years there has been a stigma around talking openly and honestly about one’s mental health and those things many rely upon for treatment, including medication and therapy. This has been especially the case for those in the black/BIPOC community. And though there has been progress made over the last few years, partially due to the realities brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, there is still much progress to be made. That is why it is especially important that New Generation Theatrical decided to produce NEXT TO NORMAL with a cast of mostly black/BIPOC actors to bring attention to this important issue and hopefully build awareness and support. And in doing so, New Gen delivers a raw, emotional gut punch that strikes a chord and a nerve in a powerful way.About the Theatre
