What Typecasting Teaches Digital Products About Personalization
Theatre needs categories. A casting team cannot discuss every performer from scratch each time a role opens. Voice type, movement skill, comic timing and playing age help organise the search. Trouble begins when a useful shorthand becomes a fixed story about what someone is allowed to do.

Surprise needs a deliberate place. Good casting can reveal a quality that a résumé did not predict. Good personalization should also reserve space for an option outside the dominant pattern. Surprise should not mean random noise. It should mean a plausible alternative with an understandable reason for appearing.

Any label broad enough to justify every result is too vague to audit. “Adventurous,” “serious” or “creative” can become empty casting notes. Replace them with the behaviour or preference that matters in the present decision.
Theatre also offers a useful rehearsal habit: change one direction and watch what shifts. A personalization team can do the same. Keep the observed history fixed, change the user’s present goal and check whether the shortlist responds. If nothing moves, the system may be treating its old label as destiny rather than evidence. If everything moves, the profile may have no stable memory at all.
Keep the Profile Open to Reinterpretation
Palaura is one example of a product asking for context through conversation. Its relevance here is limited and transparent: it is an AI matchmaker, not a theatre tool, and its workflow does not prove the quality of its recommendations.
Theatre’s deeper lesson is that a category should begin inquiry, not end it. Digital products become more genuinely personal when users can add context, challenge the label and step into a role the system did not predict.
